When evening comes, I throw my cloak on, ready to venture outside the pack borders.
“Princess, this is not a good idea. The Beta will not be pleased to hear you sneaked out of the pack.” Mia repeats for the hundredth time.
“ Chill, Mia. My uncle will not know about this because you won't tell him.” I reply with a smile.
Mia looks defeated but I know I can trust her.
After I am set, I turn to her. “ I need your help, Mia.” I say and she looks at me as if wondering what help I could need from her.
“ Help me mask my scent.”
Mia looks shocked, terrified even.
“ Princess…how did you—?”
I give her a small smile. Actually, that's something I learnt she was capable of later in my past life.
“ Your secret is safe with me.” I assure her. As an omega, possessing such a power could get her banished or worse…sentenced.
Mia nods and does her magic. Once ready, I leave the pack through the northern border. According to my investigation, it's the less guarded border–perfect for me.
When I cross the border and venture into the woods, I let my wolf surge forward but not entirely shifting.
With her borrowed speed, I push myself forward, heading to The Silver Coven.
In my past life, I'd overheard the pack warriors whispering about the abandoned territory where Alpha Graham had banished his bastard son and stripping him all the rights of ever returning.
What they hadn't known was that Aaron had turned that wasteland into a training ground.
It's there he trained an army that aided his coup and Alpha Graham's dethronement.
I had learnt that too late and ended up dying on his sword.
Two hours later, I am standing at the edge of the forest that ushered The Silver Coven. The cold night air shifts slightly and my wolf stirs sensing the danger we were throwing ourselves into.
Something inside whispers for me to turn back and find alternative ways of changing my fate but I push it back.
No. I can’t cower. So much is at stake and time is running out.
Despite the fear clawing inside me, I press forward anyway.
What greets my eyes is training equipment littering the space. Wooden spots with claw marks and what seems to be a massive training ground.
This is no banishment camp, it's an arena where only the strong survive.
Slowly, I slither inside, making sure I don't attract any unnecessary attention. With my scent masked, I only have to care about anyone catching my movements.
I have only one mission tonight; talk to Aaron.
I don't search for long before spotting him , a man standing over a kneeling figure.
Even from behind, I can't be mistaken.
The broad shoulders and that sword in his hand, still dripping with blood.
Aaron BlackThorne.
The bound man at his feet whimpers something which is carried by wind, never reaching my ears.
"Traitors don't get second chances." Aaron declares then the sword descends on him.
A past memory overlaps with the present and a gasp involuntarily leaves my lips.
Aaron's head snaps toward and our eyes meet.
Then something unexpected happens.
“Mate.” A whisper that comes not from me but my wolf echoes in my mind.
The bond slams into me like a physical blow, stealing the air from my lungs. His scent hits me all at once, making my wolf howl with recognition. Every cell in my body screams at me to go to him, to close the distance, to…
Aaron's eyes flicker from black to crimson red showing that his wolf is taking control.
Our eyes lock but no one moves, no one says a word until he breaks the silence.
"Who are you?" His voice is rough and darker than I remembered.
It carries the same edge that has been haunting me since I woke up reborn.
I try to speak, my mouth opens but no words come out.
The image of him standing there with a piercing gaze is replaced by an image of Aaron covered in blood, standing over me as I died.
A cold expression.
A disdainful sneer.
“You'll be joining them in the after world." I hear the words repeating themselves over and over in my mind.
Pain shoots from where his sword pierced me in my previous life.
"I asked you a question." That authoritative voice pulls me from my stance.
I watch with horror stricken eyes as he takes a step forward.
My body reacts before my mind can catch up and I stumble backwards.
His eyes narrow dangerously. "You are trespassing on my territory."
I scream at myself to say something, anything. I remind myself that this is what I came here for,to talk to him, make a connection and change my fate.
But looking at him, all I see is blood. All I feel is his sword slicing through my chest.
"I—" My voice cracks.
His expressions shifts and he looks irritated.
He glances down at the body at his feet, then back at me.
I see the dismissal in his eyes, like I am nothing important, just a distraction he doesn't acknowledge. Just like before.
“Your title holds no power over me."
The memory crashes over me and suddenly I can't breathe.
I clutch my chest, memories of the past overlapping, haunting my senses.
So, I do the only thing that comes to mind.
I ran.
I don't stop.I don't slow down.
I crash back through the forest, branches tearing at my cloak and roots trying to trip me.
Behind me, no footsteps follow, just a cold sentence.
"Let her go. We have work to do."
I don't stop running until my lungs burn and my legs threaten to give out. Only then do I collapse against a tree, pressing my palm against my chest.
My wolf howls in my mind, demanding we go back to our mate. But how can we when he already made his choice?
In my past life, there had been no mate bond. But now fate had bound us together, and he'd still let me run like I meant nothing.
I let out a hollow chuckle.
The Moon Goddess definitely had a twisted sense of humor.
I push off the tree and start walking back toward my pack's territory. In my mind, I am already calculating my next move.
The mate bond changes everything. Now, I just need to figure out how to use it to my advantage.
It's almost dawn when I sneak back to the pack house. I clutch the door handle to my room, ready to push it when…
“ Where do you think you are coming from?”
