Chapter 11 Closer Ashan didn’t question what had taken them so long to retrieve the melons. He’d kept himself busy honing his skill with a relentless series of target practices. When Kai and Toby reentered the main tent, Toby noticed the trapeze artists had left. Ashan was the only inhabitant. “Toby took me to see the elephants,” Kai informed him first thing. “Oh?” The man went over to pull his knives from his makeshift target. “How did it go?” “Very well,” Toby admitted. “They like her. And, frankly, Mr. Omanpang, Darius and I could use an extra hand.” It had taken him all of five seconds to realize he wanted Kai to work with the elephants, and nothing about his decision had anything to do with how comfortable she was around them. The butterflies in his stomach had turned into bees.
