Loss
“Darius.” It was hard to speak. Something was clogging his throat, preventing him from swallowing as Toby stared at the closed door.
“I’m sorry,” the older man apologized. “It was the family’s decision.”
“But she’s not a jinx.”
Darius parked himself at the extended foot of the bed. “Maybe. Maybe not.” He tapped the blanket. “If it means anything to you, Giff and I didn’t vote.”
“Thanks, but it wouldn’t have meant anything even if you had. I’m guessing the numbers were stacked pretty heavily against them.”
When the older man didn’t respond, Toby got his answer.
A nurse came in, checked his IV pump, then left. Silence descended as both men stared out the window. After a while, Darius spoke.
“What Kai said. Do you think your ability to change has been hampered?”
