24 I climbed back up the embankment after quenching my thirst and stopped. Did I imagine hearing footsteps in the leaf mulch? After listening for a few more seconds, I thought I heard something off in the distance, probably travelling down the animal track. My mind raced. I needed to find another tree to hide in. As I stood staring straight ahead and straining my ears, I noticed two things. The first was that there were voices coming from the direction of the footsteps, which increased my heart rates. The second was that I could make out a shape amongst the foliage in front of me. About ten metres away. The shape blended into the greens and browns so well that I thought I must have imagined it.
