He pushed Firilla aside and tensed his muscles, every faculty alert. The shadow darted from one column to another. Glidd sprang towards it, but the sudden movement drove a dagger of pain through his ankle and he fell to the ground. Cursing, he dragged himself up, but the shadow was out of reach behind a further column. He may have failed to seize it, but at least it was on the defensive now. He started in pursuit, painfully slow on his damaged foot, Firilla close behind. Each time they were near enough to contemplate attack the shadow retreated. They were encouraged. The creature was afraid of them. Deeper and deeper into the cavern they penetrated, the shadow always just ahead of them. Occasionally they came upon bones. Human bones.
