First taste of Urania
“This is crazy, how long has he been in there? Its almost twenty five years now and yet he did not even take a single look back since then. Do you perhaps think that he died inside?” A man said with a hat and an unshaved beard.
“Some of out acquaintances in the past said that he is still alive and that news is just a few days old. Just let him be, he got dumped and betrayed so its only natural for him to act this way. Let’s just wait for him till he decides to come back.” Another man said as they stare at the gate that connects to a world different from their own.
Urania is like earth but on the age where technology does not exist and then one day, a portal appeared right at the center of the village, unbeknownst to them, that portal is a door to another world. There are countless of people who took interest after the testimonies of the ones who entered the portal first and ventured inside the portal to see everything for themselves.
Not long after, the portal became a way for other people like hunters to make their living and sold everything that they hunt as goods and unexpectedly, merchants find the goods as highly valuable from another world. After the few successful trips inside the portal, the demand of the goods that came from the other side is getting bigger so many people decided to make a living out of the portal.
20 years in the future
“Where did that kid go? Have you seen Xerxes? Where did that kid go to this time?” a woman said while looking for her child in every nook and cranny of their house but to success she did not found her son.
Meanwhile
“Are you sure this is safe” Xerxes ask his friend as they step in front of the portal at the center of the village. No one was able to spot Xerxes as he walks near the portal along with his friends but then things turned to the worst when one of the kids he walks with kicked him inside the portal and left but someone recognized him.
And at the same time, a man came out of the portal covered in blood saying that monsters are waiting just on the other side of the portal and many hunters have already kicked the bucket. “ Don’t let anyone inside the portal right now! The monsters on the other side are running rampant!”
The terror and dread on the adult’s face was indescribable, he tried to run towards the parents of Xerxes but then realized that by the time they found someone to help the kid get out of the portal, he would have already died inside so he grit his teeth and run towards the portal but one of the hunters forbid him and dragged him to the sides. “You have heard what is happening on the other side! No civilians and other hunters are allowed to enter the portal right now!” one of the hunters shouted at the man as he struggles to get the hunter’s hand off him.
“Let go of me! A kid I know just entered the portal!” the hunter could not care about what the man just said since there are more problems they are facing right now.
Once stepping inside the portal, one cannot go back unless a full day has passed in Urania. A wide-known fact that everyone in the village and every hunter knows.
The moment Xerxes got on the other side of the portal, he fell flat facing on the ground. “Huh? Where am I? What am I doing here?” Xerxes thought to himself.
looks around only to see that other people are getting annihilated by monsters that he had only read from fantasy books. A horde of orcs are decimating the hunters who were waiting anxiously to enter the portal to go back home. Orcs have fantastic sense of smell.
”I need to get out of here before they sense that I am here. How the hell did I end up in this situation anyway-“ Xerxes talked to himself in the heart.
He was about to crouch and leave when he realize that there are shadows behind him and the stink of orcs overwhelmed his nose. Without a moment of hesitation, Xerxes grabbed the nearest weapon he can grab from the dead hunters on the ground and struck the spear that he got.
His decision was right, three orcs were towering behind him. He manage to stab one of the orcs’ head and immediately killing it, but he can no longer retrieve the spear. The other two orcs proceeded to attack him.
Xerxes immediately run away from the other people where the orcs are sure to be going about and grabbed a few gears and weapons as much as he can.
“Help!” “ARG!” he can hear the screams of the people near the portal waiting for the time to pass but their number are dwindling by the minute.
From the corner of his eyes, he saw a dead man ravaged by orcs holding a crossbow with loads of arrows behind him.
“Did I just spend a lifetime worth of luck?” he thought as he immediately grabs the crossbow and leave everything beside a knight and a rope that he can use for emergency purposes.
Xerxes immediately looks for a nice place that anyone would not think of hiding in and surely enough he found a bush surrounded by mud just above the portal. ‘I think I really used a lifetime of my karma here.’
He immediately sprinted towards the direction of his destination but when he passed by a tree, he saw two orcs coming towards him.
“Eh? Weren’t they the ones with the one I killed? They were looking for me the entire time?!” he exclaimed as the orcs run towards him. ‘Well, isn’t this a good opportunity to test out my crossbow?’
Xerxes immediately pointed the crossbow in one of the orcs and just manage to graze the orc’s ear. ‘I didn’t really think that was easy. My aim was off by a mile- a waste of arrow.’ Xerxes immediately reloaded the crossbow and aimed a little lower and hits the orc straight for it’s head and immediately killed it but one of them are close enough to attack him leaving him no choice but to resort to close combat but..
BAAM!
“Guha!” ‘What the hell is this weak body? That blow alone is painful enough to make me crawl in pain- guha! Another more blow and I’m done for!’ Xerxes gathered all his strength just to crawl away from the orc and grabbed a handful of sand and threw it on the orcs
He then grabbed his knife and tried to slit its throat when he realized that orcs have excellent sense of smell. Without any more time in his hands, he grabbed the arrow and the crossbow and shot it in near point blank range as the orcs blood splattered around.
THUMP!
“Kill count: 3.” The screams are getting distant, and Xerxes realize that there is not much time left. He drags his body to the spot that he picked and right before he started shooting the orcs down. He ties the rope that he brought to the tree behind the bush and tied the other end to his body.
After his preparations are complete, he shot down one of the orcs assaulting the hunters- or at least what’s left of them.
