The dragonewt went to where the three were standing and sniff around it and left after looking seeing that there is nothing around. Rupert and Ramirez are stalking it the whole time as they try to keep their hearts from pounding so heavily. “Phew! That was close. I have not seen a monster like that at all. What was that?” Rupert fell on his back after the monster left while Ramirez still looks around, making sure that the monster really left. “That was the first time I saw something like that as well. Does the people back home know that creatures like that exists?” he asks Rupert but he doesn’t have an answer to that question.
They both turn to Xerxes who is devastated of what he saw in the middle of the large body of water. ‘What the hell is happening? Why am I on earth? Those people there, they are Americans! And that tall structure is the statute of liberty, there is no way I would mistake it for something else!] he yells inside his head while the two are showing signs of concern about their master.
Seeing that it’s getting dark and lighting something in open space would only attract monsters and creatures to attack them so they decided to stay inside of what they thought is a cave. “Look at this Rupert, this cave, it doesn’t look like it formed naturally.” Ramirez said to Rupert after seeing the place properly because of the flames. They both stare in awe and ask themselves if people made it. “I don’t think people can make it that perfect though there are cracks and broken parts, the surface is just too smooth. Building this thing is utterly impossible.” Rupert denies what Ramirez thinks in his head but then Xerxes cuts in.
“They are man made. There is a civilization that is able to make the impossible possible but they are gone.” He said that immediately ended the two’s argument. Seeing that their master had already regained his demeanor, they offered him food which he declines politely. “How are you so certain about that master?” Rupert ask and Xerxes points to the direction where he saw the statue of liberty. “I saw people there, you all saw the bright red light that lit in the sky? That was a flare and they use it to warn everyone.” He said with a blank expression.
“Flare? What is that? Do you mean you have seen people on the other side?” Rupert ask. “All that I’m saying is that something happened to their civilization and that might happen to ours as well.” Xerxes said as Rupert immediately understands what he meant. “You mean the portal might open a path for our world to end up like this?” Xerxes nods his head and added. “This place, the boulder like caves or mounds that you have seen, I think this used to be full of people.” Xerxes tried not to tell them that he once live in this world since he is sure that they will not understand it as well and will only confuse them.
[Until I have an answer to why I am reborn, I will not tell them anything about my past.] he says to himself and told the two that they will try to make contact tomorrow if they find a chance. “But we should create a place where we can hide ourselves and observe what’s going on outside as well. This place is dangerous especially when we don’t know what is lurking just outside this wall.” The other two agrees since they both have the feeling that they are trapped.
First thing in the morning, the three stealthily gets out of the rundown building and observe everything around them before proceeding to the next location. Rupert was tasked to take note of all the monsters that they are going to encounter from that point on while Ramirez tries to guard them from the back and Xerxes from the rear.
“Looks like it’s clear, Ramirez stand guard while we create the shelter that we will be staying from now on. Rupert gather some things like fire wood or something, bring some weeds as well, make sure not to cut the roots so that the weeds don’t die while I try to gather as much blocks as possible.” Left with the easy tasks the two agrees hesitantly and Xerxes did not listen to their complaints.
[It’s best if I do it myself since I have quite a knowledge about the world before I died. The best thing to use is a roof, plastics are takes thousands or even million years to decompose. Surely there is still something we can use like-] Xerxes eyes widens after seeing a what it used to be a waiting shed made entire of fiberglass. He first cleans out a part of the moss and saw that the fiberglass is somehow preserved.
He then yanks a part of it and it easily breaks apart so easily. “This, we can use this for the roof.” He then looks around to see if there are monsters nearby and there is none so he immediately grabs everything that he can get and bring it back to the two. “Rupert, I want you to do something.” Rupert after finishing what Xerxes ordered him to do smiles in delight that he will be of more use.
Xerxes then comes back to fetch the rest if the fiber glass only to see an elf holding a bow stands in the same place where he got the fiber glass. “Human- pointy ears- elf.” He then hides himself but he is already found out by the elf who immediately shoots an arrow towards him. Luckily Xerxes hide immediately so the elf missed his shot. “Wait- I’m not here to fight!” Xerxes yells as he tries to take a peak and immediately pulls his head right away to dodge another arrow. Seeing that there is no chance at talking to the elf to stop if from attacking. Xerxes pulls out his white cloth and hang it in a pole, signifying that he surrenders.
He slowly walks in sight and sees the elf aiming for him, he then raise his hands so that the elf can see that he doesn’t want to fight. “What are you doing here, human?” the elf ask and surprising enough, Xerxes can understand it’s language. “I am here to gather some things for the shelter that we are about to build and it just so happens that you are standing right beside it.” The elf then chuckles and laughs at him. “Kukuku, humans really are crazy. Are you sure you plan to make a shelter in this place?” Xerxes nods his head and slightly as the smile on the elf’s face disappeared.
“Very well then, suit yourself.” The elf then left to another direction. “Sheesh! He did not even apologized for shooting me earlier. They really are prideful.” Xerxes says to himself as he gathers the rest of the fiberglass and returns back immediately. By the time he arrived, Rupert had already finished what he asked. “Is this alright master?” Rupert ask as Xerxes nods his head. “Yup, that’s fine. Now leave the rest to me.”
Xerxes asked Rupert to make a little room, two meters long and 2 meters wide and stack some rocks in front where the door will be. Xerxes gathers some log and long branches and place them at the top to hold and support the fiberglass and then cover it with dirt to give it a little camouflage. Seeing what their master wants to do, the both helped him so that the work gets done a lot faster.
A few moments later, the shelter is done and Xerxes is making the finishing touches when all of the sudden the ground rumbles so they all entered the shelter, Xerxes takes a peak in a specially made hole and saw that the elf is chased by some rhinoceros looking monster, it is almost dark by that time and the elf took it to his advantage and throws a smoke bomb and then wants to run away when all of the sudden, a couple of arms grab him inside the shelter and to it’s surprise, it was Xerxes and two other humans that the elf had not seen before.
“What are you doing human?-“ Xerxes gestures him to be silent as he peaks outside and saw that the monster had already left but then because of the smoke bomb, it attracted some other monsters to the area. “Rupert, take this opportunity to learn of the monsters and how they look like.” He whispers and Rupert immediately looks at the monsters gathered around the smoke bomb.
“That is brave of you to run around like that when this place is crawling with monsters.” Xerxes said as he offers the elf a hand but the elf slap his hands away. “What do you think you are doing human? An elf never accepts a favor from the disgusting humans.” The elf glares as Ramirez wants to have a go with the elf for being rude to his master but Xerxes stops him. “Don’t. We are in a dangerous situation right now, any noise would alert the monsters and locate us immediately.” Xerxes said as both parties calm down.
Rupert finishes his task and documented all the monsters that he had seen around the smoke bomb and hides the documents inside his bag. With no choice, the elf stayed inside with the three humans as they cook for food. The elf looks around and saw the things from where he shot Xerxes is used as roof and that they have done so efficiently. Xerxes made him food but he refuse to eat the food given by the humans. “I’m not hungry.”
His remark then proves him wrong when his stomach growls.
GROOOOOOOWL!
The elf’s face turns red after he humiliate himself in front of the species that he despise so much. “Wow, I guess you can lie but your body can’t.” Ramirez said that made the elf even more ashamed. “Eat, there is no shame in eating the food given by humans. Though you elves have longer life spans. You might cut off your long life if your that stubborn.” Xerxes said as the elf then eats the food. Rupert hands him water to drink since he might choke himself to death.
“What are your goals for coming to a place like this.” The elf starts opening up and Xerxes seize that opportunity and tells him the truth. “We are here to look for a missing person.” The elf then flinched after hearing what he said. “Missing persons?” Xerxes nods his head and elaborated that some persons have gone missing up until now and the elf told them something that gave the three of them a shock.
“The white people on the other side of the great water, they capture humans. My people think that they are humans from another tribe but they belong inside the portal?” the three then froze after hearing what the elf said. ‘Capturing humans?’ Xerxes thought to himself as he feels that something bad is about to happen.
