Suddenly she knew. How she knew, she was not certain. Just like how she knew of his misery, the knowledge came to her unbidden, the knowledge manifesting itself in her mind out of seemingly thin air. Yet she knew this and more. She knew that he had a girl, a daughter her own age who needed him and needed him to be whole again. It was imperative for her that he be whole again. Emmeline started after the man; she opened her mouth to speak; she needed to reach out to him, to ease his burden. But the image of the handsome stranger and the image of the sea came crashing back into her mind like a stampeding bull. These and her own self-doubts conspired against her.
