CHAPTER SIX Strangely, Emmeline found herself thinking about the last time Father had taken her to Darloque with him. It was after the last good crop they had gathered before the drought came. When they had filled the storehouse with enough food to last them until the next harvest, they loaded the remainder into the cart and headed into the city. Father had given the task of pulling the cart to Jacques. He was more capable of pulling heavy loads than Cheval, and besides, her father liked the donkey despite his often-stubborn disposition.
