Chapter 1
Jaxx stood on the balcony of the hotels master suite, the smoke of her cigarette curling up past her eyes as she took a drag; her cell phone screen lighting up as the name of her godfather and captain pulsed across it. Sighing, she pinched the filter of the smoke between the index and middle finger of her right hand before answering her cell.
“Hey Max, to what do I owe the pleasure of this call?” She questioned.
He sighed before he responded, his southern drawl more noticeable by how tired he sounded. “It’s time for you to return to the clan, Jaxx.”
Her brows furrowed, her lips pursing in irritation. It has been 2 years since she was needed back at the Clan. She had been sent to help one of the sister clans to clean up a mess that a rival now turned friend pack had started. Thanks to her, they shouldn’t need anything more but she did secure another truce for her Clan, should they, or rather she, ever need anything.
At her silence he continued, “The Princess is “requesting” your presence.” The sarcasm in his voice wasn't hard to miss.
“For what now?” She said, her tone clipped.
The last time the Princess had her come back, it was to be her bodyguard while she went through the process of mating and marrying Jaxx’s Alpha mate. Yeah, you read that right. There is a lot of history to that story but she’d get to that eventually.
“She is getting mated again.”
Jaxx grit her teeth before she took a long drag off her quickly diminishing cigarette. She’d probably be chain smoking tonight with this news. About 40 years ago, the Princess of the Shadow Clan, Jaxx’s Clan, had lost her second mate to sickness. That’s what she claimed anyway. Jaxx had her suspicions but no evident to back up what she theorized as poison being the cause of Clayton’s death.
“How soon did she say this was going to happen?”
“The Alpha of the Black Opal Pack will be arriving in a couple of weeks. She wants you back before that.”
‘Oh great.’ She thought to herself as her beast growled. “I thought the Alpha of The Black Opal’s was already mated, though.” She remembered that family well. Back when her Father and Mother were alive, they were the King and Queen of the Kitsune Shadow Clan. When they were around, the Black Opal family was over for visits every chance they got as they were close friends, family almost. Being the King and Queen’s daughter, she was to be in an arraigned marriage with the Black Opal’s first born son to strength their ties. Low and behold, they were actually fated mates.
“She is mating their son.” Max growled out, the anger of the situation evident.
When the disaster within the Clan happened, Jaxx’s Uncle took over and she got moved out of the Clan house to be stationed as a warrior in the guard and that was that. Now she finds out that her Uncle’s daughter was sinking her claws into someone who was fated to Jaxx. Again. Coincidence? She doesn’t think so. Her Kitsune began to have a fit in the back of her mind and her own anger surged forward, the flames of it unfurling within the pit of her stomach. She put the cigarette out in the ashtray next to her and did a couple of breathing exercises to try to calm herself.
“Jaxx, I’m sorry.” She knew he was. Out of everyone in the Clan, him and his family were the only ones who knew what had happened and what she really was supposed to be. Max has been through everything with her. His wife, Lucia, has always been there for her like her mother would have been if…
She shook her head to get rid of those thoughts. No use in dredging up the past.
“Tell her ladyship I will be back within the week.” She jeered out, not being able to keep the tone of anger out of her voice.
“Lucia will take care of getting your cottage ready for when you are home. We have missed you! Miranda has too.” Max’s voice was gentle, causing Jaxx’s face to soften and her compassion to come forward.
“I have missed the 3 of you, as well, Max.” She replied. “I will let you know when I have come back to Minnesota.” With that said, she ended the call and sat down in the lounge chair the hotel provided on the balcony, lighting up another cigarette. She reclined back and looked up to the sky. The Northern Lights have come out to dance tonight.
Being a century old, she was way passed tired of being someone else’s pawn or door mat. When she got back, she was going to do whatever it takes to end this game of theirs. She just had to do it right. She just had to be clever. But, all thanks to them, they have unknowingly provided her with all the necessary skills she needed to take them down. For her family. For her late fated mates. For her.

Drake was startled awake by his cell phone going on. Grunting, he sat up and scrubbed his hands over his face. The dream was back and he was loathed to awoken from it. This dream was always his favorite dream as his mate was by his side. He loved everything about his mate of his but her eyes were his favorite aspect of her. Her right eye was purple and her left eye was blue. But around her irises, whenever her beast was near the surface, were rimmed with a bright neon orange and they made him feel as if they were seeing right into the very depths of his being.
Rolling his eyes as his phone went off again, he picked it up and answered it without looking at the caller ID. “What?” His deep baritone voice was rough with sleep and agitation.
“Alpha, I have the best news for you!” Brad’s voice was filled with elation, which caused Drake’s ears to perk up.
“What news would that be?”
“She is returning!”
Drake grinned at that, his beasts purring in contentment. He knew she would eventually. But he had a feeling it wasn’t going to be because she wanted to.
“That is fantastic news! Do you know specifically when?” He moved to sit on the edge of the bed, his bare feet hitting the plush carpet.
“I only know that she will be arriving within the week, Alpha.”
“You did well, Brad! Please continue with our plan. I will be seeing you shortly.”
“Yes Alpha!”
With that, he ended the call and stood up. Regardless of what time it is, he knew he wasn’t going to be able to get back to sleep anytime soon. He had known for as long as he could remember that she was his fated mate. Even when he was a kid, although, at the time, he didn’t understand it because of how young he was. She has already lived so many life times, in comparison to a human. Her age didn’t bother him though. Most supernatural beings live for a very long time and he was no exception. He was born special and by special, he means he was born with 2 different beast. A Wolf and a Kitsune.
Boy does it get loud in his mind a lot.
He decided to shower and get ready for the day, maybe hit the training grounds for a few hours before he had to shut himself up in his office for paperwork. ‘Don’t worry, Love. We will be together before you know it.’
