Alfred gave up on his sack when he reached Winnie Street. It pulled in the water and weighed him down once it had cleared the surface. It only took him a second to debate his options before he simply lifted it overhead and tossed it over a fence into a deserted yard to keep it from falling underfoot in the flooded street. When he reached Broadway, his thighs were burning from his walk, and his clothes were soaked through. The avenue was not dry as Joseph had anticipated; inches of water collected against the curbs and on either side of the palm-lined median.
