“Come. Come.” I took Esther's arm and followed Mrs. Rosenberg as she made her way up the walk and around the side to a door. “This is the entrance to your apartment. You see? You have your own way to get in and out without disturbing anyone. The owner lives on the main floor. Come.” She removed a key from her purse and fitted it into the lock. We followed her up a stairway to a door where she fitted another key and went inside. Esther and I stood on the threshold of the open doorway, hesitating. “Come in,” Mrs. Rosenberg urged. “This is your new home. Please. Let me show you.” She pulled us in and closed the door.
