Chapter 6 My whole body gave one of those startled jerks as I woke up. Gun. Shots. Slamming into the sidewalk. “Easy, you’re safe,” a familiar voice said softly. I blinked, trying to get my brain the rest of the way back online. Brendan was behind me, an arm wrapped around my body, holding me. We were still in the hotel room bed. I have no idea why that seemed oddly surprising. “How long did I fall asleep?” My voice sounded thick and rusty to my ears. “A little over an hour.” “Really?” It seemed like a lot more time should have passed. “I thought maybe it was almost night.” “It’s quarter to four.
