A loud raucous repeating squawk broke through my sleep. Huh? What? Brendan’s hand closed on my shoulder, shaking me. “Wake up. Grab some clothes. The fire alarm is going off,” he said. I stumbled out of bed at the same time there was knocking on the door. Brendan yanked on his jeans and picked up his gun before he opened the door. The cop on guard duty was there. “We have to leave the building. I can smell smoke, so it doesn’t appear to be a false alarm,” said the uniformed officer. I had managed to get my pants and shirt on, but couldn’t figure out where I’d kicked my shoes. Did I really need them?
