Episode 11: The Fractured City

807 Words
By morning, the rain had stopped — but peace did not return with dawn. Elaris no longer hummed with its usual rhythm. The luminous towers dimmed, the floating bridges creaked, and whispers spread faster than light. News of the attack had traveled through the city like fire through dry paper. From her balcony, Elara could see the change. Groups of citizens gathered in the streets below — some chanting her name in awe, others cursing it in fear. “The Heir of Light has returned,” said one voice. “She’ll destroy us again,” answered another. The words reached her even from this height. Each one felt like a stone thrown at her heart. Inside her chamber, Adrian stood by the window, watching the same storm brew below. “They’ve split already. The Council can’t hide this much longer.” Elara turned from the balcony. “Who leaked it?” He hesitated. “Someone on the inside. Maybe even the ones who sent the assassins.” “The Council,” she said bitterly. “They claim to protect Elaris, but they’re tearing it apart.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Not all of them. Lady Solenne isn’t your enemy — but others… have forgotten what light means.” Before she could reply, a soft knock echoed at the door. A young messenger entered — barely more than a boy, his robe marked with the crest of the outer districts. He bowed deeply, his voice trembling. “My lady, there’s unrest near the Northern Gate. The Veilguards have been attacked. The rebels call themselves The Eclipse.” Elara frowned. “The Eclipse?” Adrian’s eyes darkened. “A name that hasn’t been spoken in centuries.” The messenger swallowed hard. “They say… they serve the stars that were cast out.” Silence filled the room. Elara’s pulse quickened. “The Regent.” Adrian nodded grimly. “His influence spreads faster than shadow. He’s found those who already doubted you — and given them purpose.” Elara straightened, her fear hardening into resolve. “Then I’ll go to them. I’ll face them before this city burns again.” Adrian stepped forward sharply. “You can’t. They’ll use your presence to divide the people even more.” “So I’m supposed to hide while they twist my name?” she snapped, her voice breaking. “I won’t let history repeat itself.” He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Then at least take me with you.” A ghost of a smile tugged at her lips. “Did you ever plan to let me go alone?” He didn’t answer — only reached for his sword. By nightfall, they moved through the streets in disguise. Elaris looked different in the dark — the floating lanterns replaced by flickering torches, banners torn down, walls marked with new sigils: the eclipse of two moons drawn in black ink. The further they walked, the heavier the air grew. The light of the city seemed to bend away from them. At the Northern Gate, the crowd gathered like a tide — rebels cloaked in shadow, shouting beneath a shattered statue of the old guardians. A voice rose from the chaos. “She thinks she can return and rule us again!” Elara stepped into the square before Adrian could stop her. The crowd fell silent. “I don’t want to rule you,” she said, her voice steady but soft. “I want to save what’s left.” A stone flew from somewhere — striking the ground near her feet. “Save us?” another voice shouted. “You’re the reason the stars bled in the first place!” Adrian drew his blade, but Elara raised her hand, stopping him. “Let them speak.” The leader of the rebels emerged — a woman with silver hair and crimson eyes. Her presence was almost regal. “The Heir of Light returns,” she said with a mocking smile. “And yet, you shine for a world that never asked for you.” Elara recognized her instantly — though she didn’t know how. “You… were one of the Starlit Guard.” The woman’s smile faded. “Once. Before you chose to let the Veil consume us.” The crowd murmured. Adrian moved closer, whispering, “She’s dangerous.” Elara met the rebel’s gaze. “Then let me make it right.” The woman tilted her head. “You can’t fix what was never broken, Elara. You can only choose which side burns brighter — light or shadow.” Before Elara could answer, the torches around the square flared — their flames turning black. The crowd gasped as a dark ripple spread through the air, the mark of the Shadow Regent forming above them like a living eclipse. The rebellion had begun.
