Episode 8: The Stars Remember Darkness Too

670 Words
The light between Elara and Adrian flared, brilliant and alive — but its warmth quickly turned to something else. A low rumble shook the Observatory. The glowing constellations on the walls flickered, their soft gold light deepening to crimson. Outside, the twin moons trembled, and streaks of black fire rippled across the sky. Adrian’s expression hardened. “No. It’s too soon.” Elara clutched the crystal to her chest, feeling it pulse like a heartbeat out of rhythm. “What’s happening?” “The Veil,” he said through clenched teeth. “It’s responding to your awakening. The balance between light and shadow— it’s breaking.” The air split with a deafening c***k. From the edge of the Observatory’s ceiling, a fracture of pure darkness spread outward like ink in water. Stars blinked out, one by one, until the chamber was lit only by the glow of Elara’s crystal. “Elara,” Adrian said, stepping in front of her, “whatever happens, don’t let go of the crystal. You’re its anchor now.” “But if it’s causing this—” “It’s not causing it,” he interrupted. “It’s protecting you from it.” The darkness swirled, thick and heavy, coalescing into a figure — tall, cloaked, its face hidden beneath a shifting veil of shadows. Its voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once. “So… the Heir awakens.” Elara’s heart pounded. The voice felt familiar — like a nightmare she’d lived a thousand times before. “Who are you?” It laughed softly, a sound like cracking glass. “The one you left behind when you chose the light.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “The Shadow Regent.” The name filled the air with dread. Even the stars in the Observatory dimmed at its mention. “I sealed you away,” Elara whispered. “Long ago…” “And in doing so, you sealed away yourself,” the shadow replied. “But now that your light has returned, so has my right to exist.” The floor shuddered. The constellation map shattered, sending shards of starlight spinning through the air. Adrian drew his blade — forged from starlight itself — and stepped forward. “You’re not taking her.” The shadow’s laughter deepened. “Oh, knight of fading vows… you think you can fight darkness when it was born from your own despair?” Adrian hesitated, just for a heartbeat — and Elara saw pain flicker across his face, as if the words had pierced something buried deep within him. She reached out, touching his arm. “Adrian, don’t listen—” But the shadow struck first. A wave of black flame surged forward. Adrian shielded her, his sword blazing, but the force sent them both crashing against the far wall. “Elara!” he shouted, his voice raw. “Run!” She shook her head, tears in her eyes. “No. Not this time.” The crystal flared in her palm, responding to her defiance. Light erupted from her body, weaving through the cracks of the Observatory like veins of living fire. The shadow screamed, retreating slightly — but not defeated. “You can’t destroy what you once were,” it hissed. “Light and shadow are one. And I will return… when the stars fall again.” And just like that, it dissolved into mist, leaving behind only silence. Elara fell to her knees, her breath shaking. The glow of the crystal dimmed to a gentle pulse. Adrian knelt beside her, his expression a mixture of awe and fear. “You shouldn’t have been able to do that. Not yet.” She looked up at him. “Then maybe I’m stronger than before.” He hesitated, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “Or maybe the darkness is.” Outside, the twin moons flickered — for the first time in centuries, one of them beginning to eclipse the other. And somewhere, far beyond the veil of stars, something ancient stirred.
