I kept staring at the woman as if she were an alien from another planet. And no matter how hard I tried I couldn’t see her as Adan’s sister. For starters she looked nothing like him. There wasn’t a single thing the two had in common in terms of their physical appearance. So either this woman was adopted or she was flat out lying to me.
“You’re his sister?” I asked as my eyebrows shot up to my hairline.
She smiled but it didn’t reach her eyes before nodding. “Yeah.”
“Adan never mentioned a sister,” I said with a shrug, trying to glean the truth from her in some way or the other. If she wasn’t his sister, then what was she doing here? And why did she have access to his office?
“He usually doesn’t. That’s why I had to come all the way from across the country to visit him,” she replied and I coked my head to the side as I regarded her with suspicion. Something was off about this woman. I didn’t like that she was here to see Adan. If Adan didn’t mention her, then it was obvious he didn’t like her, right? There was problems they had which he didn’t bother discussing with anybody.
I wanted her to leave. I wanted her to get out of here and never return. Something told me Adan wouldn’t be happy to see her, and for some inexplicable reason I didn’t want his mood to be ruined, especially by someone who wasn’t me.
“Any reason for that?” I asked and folded my arms in front of my chest.
She gave me a slow once over before locking her eyes with mine. “You’re not his equal, so why are you talking like you are?”
The comment burned despite the gentle tone it flowed through and I couldn’t help but harden my stance against her. She knew me, that much was obvious, but she had no right to put me in my place. No, that right belonged to Adan and I wouldn’t let anybody else have it.
“What I am or not is none of your business and you would do well to remember that,” I replied in a saccharine tone that wiped the smile off her face. “He’s in surgery right now and will take a while. You’re free to leave and come back some other time.” I actually wanted to tell her not to come back but I kept the comment to myself. I wanted to know why she was here but I doubt she would tell me.
She jutted her chin out as her eyes flashed in annoyance. “I will stay right here.” To prove her point she pulled out one of the visitor chairs and sat down on it. She crossed one leg over the other and leaned back to get comfortable.
I rolled my eyes because I couldn’t drag her out by her hair. “Suit yourself.”
“You can leave if you want,” she told me. “I doubt Adan will miss you.”
To let her know exactly what I thought of her suggestion, I sat down on Adan’s chair and flashed her a vindictive smile. The sparkle in her eyes dimmed but otherwise she gave no indication that my presence bothered her. We were both here to see Adan and it seemed neither one of us was willing to let him go.
Time passed at an excruciating pace and I knew it was all because of her. Every cell in my body was on edge and I wished she would leave but she sat there comfortably as if Adan’s office was her personal sanctuary. I kept staring at the clock, hoping the needle would move faster so Adan could come back and we wouldn’t have to stare at each other and curse her.
Adan never mentioned a sister and now that she was here I didn’t know how to feel about her. She was pretty, I had to give her that, but she didn’t resemble him in the least. I wanted answers but I would only get them from my Master. And if he refused to give me any information—because he had the power to refuse me unlike me—then I would have to resort to other methods which would most likely piss him off.
“Why are you here?” Zilpah asked, breaking the ever thickening ice between us.
“Adan told me to come,” I replied.
“He’s your Master. Address him with respect,” she said in a sharp tone which didn’t affect me in the least.
“I’ll address him however I please. If he has a problem he’ll speak to me directly. He doesn’t need anybody to speak for him,” I responded in a flat tone and smirked internally when she glared at me.
“You really need to learn some manners,” she muttered and I scoffed and rolled my eyes but didn’t bother giving her a verbal response. Adan was the only one I answered to and no one else.
The clock took its sweet time in changing the hour and just when I decided that I couldn’t take any more of Zilpah’s toxic presence the door opened once again and this time Adan stepped inside and smiled as soon as his eyes found mine. I couldn’t help the smile that I returned to him but stopped when I found Zilpah glaring at me.
“Zilpah, what are you doing here?” Adan asked in a neutral tone as he rounded the desk and came to stand beside me. He leaned down and kissed my forehead and I immediately got up from his chair but he forced me to sit back down. “No, it’s alright. Keep sitting,” he said before turning to his sister.
“I… I just wanted to see you,” Zilpah said, all traces of the confident woman I’d witnessed vanishing in an instant. “Can’t a sister visit her brother?”
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Who was this woman? To the world she appeared to be a force of nature but with Adan she was acting like a scared, little deer. Gone was the woman who kept reminding me of my position in Adan’s life. In place of her stood a woman, unsure of herself; a woman who needed Adan’s validation.
“It depends on what the sister wants,” Adan replied, sardonically. He placed his hand on my shoulder and I honestly didn’t understand the reasoning behind the gesture. Was he trying to send her a message or me?
“Like I said… I wanted to see you. It’s been so long since you visited,” she said and pressed her lips together as she wrung her hands.
“I live with Gramps, you know that,” Adan replied.
“Yes, but you can come visit,” she said, sounding like a little girl about to throw a tantrum.
“I have a busy schedule. I’m a doctor in case you forgot,” he told her. His tone not softening in the slightest. I almost felt bad for her but considering how she treated me, I felt nothing for her.
“If you think I’ll believe that you can’t make time to see your family just because you’re a doctor, you’re mistaken. Don’t take me for a fool, Adan. I know she’s the reason why you’ve stopped visiting,” Zilpah stated, vehemently while glaring daggers at me. I really wanted to slap her and tell her to get the f**k out of here but it wasn’t my place to do so. I just hoped Adan would do it for me.
“And what if she is?” He asked, c*****g his head to the side and I had the sudden urge to get up from his chair and wrap my arms around him and never let go.
“I didn’t even know you chose a woman. I had to hear it from Mom,” she said, the gleam of victimhood back in her eyes.
“I didn’t know I had to tell you,” he replied.
“Why did you choose a slave out of everyone? You can have any woman you want. Why couldn’t you pick someone of your position?” She asked and it took everything in me not to punch her in the face and ruin it for every man out there.
“That’s none of your business,” he replied. “And as for choosing someone of my position, that would be impossible because there is no one of my position.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” she said, sadness oozing from her soul.
“If that’s all you came here to say then feel free to leave. I have nothing to say, let alone explain to you. I’m taking Angel out for lunch,” he told her and though I wanted to do a victory dance I kept myself rooted to the chair.
“Mom and Dad want you to visit on Saturday for dinner,” she said as she stood up.
“Tell them I’ll think about it,” he said and kept staring at her until she gave up and left his office without a word.
It was only when the door closed behind her did I get up from the chair and faced my Master. “Sister? I didn’t know you had a sister.”
“I don’t,” he said and winced. “She’s adopted.”
Adopted? That made sense. She looked nothing like him and her obsession with him was bordering on illegal. I was glad that she wasn’t related to him, but I knew how she felt and I didn’t like it.
“Well that explains why she likes you so much,” I said.
His eyes shuttered and if I wasn’t mistaken then he actually looked uncomfortable. I couldn’t believe it. Adan was the most self assured man I knew. I never thought he was capable of feeling embarrassed.
“Yeah, I don’t know why she does,” he said.
“I do,” I muttered too low for him to hear. “Doesn’t she know you’re off limits?”
His eyebrow arched as a smile made its way to his lips. “I’m off limits?” He asked as he snaked his arms around my waist. “Since when?”
“Well you can’t have two women. And according to her you chose me. So… there’s no way you can choose her or anybody else.”
“Is that so?” He asked and leaned forward until his lips were a whisper away from mine.
“Yes. I… I believe so,” I answered, letting him capture me with those intense green eyes of his.
“So I’m not allowed to choose another?” He asked and we both knew the answer to this question.
“You can choose whoever you want. But just know that if you’re choosing somebody else then you can’t choose me,” I stated.
He kissed me then and instead of pulling away I wrapped my arms around his neck and kissed him back. I usually wasn’t this enthusiastic when it came to kissing him, but seeing Zilpah made something inside of me snap and now I wanted to prove a point to my Master. I wanted him to choose me.
You’re his whether you like it or not.
I was aware of that. I knew that he had the choice to do whatever he wanted and be with whoever he pleased. I didn’t have the same choice and never would.
When his tongue demanded entrance, I opened up for him. Resistance felt futile after seeing Zilpah and understanding her intentions towards him. I didn’t know why I wanted to keep him. Maybe I didn’t. Maybe I just didn’t want Zilpah to have him.
“Now why can’t you be this cooperative all the time?” Adan asked as soon as he stopped kissing me.
I didn’t reply to that because I didn’t know what to tell him. I didn’t want to be jealous of his sister but I was. I knew there was a woman who wanted him and after the way he’d taken over my life, I didn’t want him to just leave me for another woman; not after he made me breakup with Wesley.
“I—I’m not cooperative. I just… got a little worked up after that witch showed up,” I said and glared at nothing in particular.
“That witch? What did she do to you?” He asked and I proceeded to tell him everything that transpired between us. By the end of my little tirade Adan forced me to rest my head against his chest and just held me for a couple of minutes until all the anger dissipated and I was back to normal.
“Thank you,” I said and tried to pull away but he just tightened his arms, preventing me from leaving.
“I think we need to make a slight change of plans for the weekend,” he said.
“What?”
“I think I should visit my parents for dinner on Saturday. And I’ll be taking you with me,” he said, causing my jaw to drop.
“Uh why?”
He shrugged. “Isn’t it obvious, Angel?
“I want to send a message to everyone.”
