The text message sent a chill down my spine. I didn’t understand why Adan was behaving so irrationally. He was a doctor, he should know better than to tell me to abandon a sick man. I didn’t understand why he was being like this. And there was no way I could obey him when he was being like this. “You can do whatever you want, Master, but there’s no way I’m breaking up with Wesley,” I said to the screen before flipping my phone over and resuming my task of cutting the vegetables. Once I finished I prepared the broth and drop the vegetables in it before leaving the kitchen to go and check on Wesley. “Hey, are you doing alright?” He smiled and nodded before patting the space beside him, beckoning me over. “Come and sit with me. I want to watch TV with you.” “In a bit. I’m preparing soup for you. Are you in pain? Should I get you some more painkillers?” I questioned as I flopped down on the couch next to him. Wesley took my hand and caressed the top of it with his thumb. “No. I’m good for now,” he said and dropped a kiss on my forehead. “Thank you for being here and taking care of me. It means a lot. It’s so easy for you to walk away and never look back, yet you’re here taking care of me and preparing soup just so I can feel better.” “You don’t have to thank me for it. Abandoning someone when they need you is an asshole move and I would never do that to you,” I told him. “I’ll help you fix this, Wes. We’ll get a second and a third opinion and in the end if surgery is the only option, then I promise you I’ll be there with you every step of the way.” “I really don’t want to get surgery. I hate it,” he said and I saw fear flash in his eyes before it disappeared. “Don’t worry. Hopefully we’ll find something. But I do trust the surgeons at the hospital,” I replied but he immediately shook his head. “I still don’t want to get surgery,” he repeated and I nodded because it was evident he wasn’t ready to listen to reason. “Okay, okay,” I said and kissed his cheek. “Don’t worry. I’ll go and check on the soup.” I went back to the kitchen and smiled when I saw and tasted the soup. I set the timer and began preparing to plate it. My eyes kept flicking to my phone and I was tempted to check it incase Adan sent something else to me. But I refrained and focused on getting the soup to Wesley. “Here you go,” I said as I stepped out of the kitchen with the soup. “I hope you enjoy it.” “You’ve got magic in your hands, babe,” he said as he picked up the spoon and began eating. “I know I’m going to enjoy this.” “There’s more where that came from. Do you want the same for dinner or should I prepare something else for you?” I questioned. “I’ll let you know. I just want to enjoy this soup for now and then take a nap.” “Okay. I’ll prepare the bed for you.” I left him to go in his room and prepare it for him. I’d already made the bed in the morning before we left for the hospital but I needed to light some scented candles because he enjoyed them. According to him it brought him peace. Once I finished lighting the candles, I pulled the drapes so the room was bathed in semi-darkness before going back to him. “The soup was delicious,” he said and I beamed in response. “I enjoyed every bit.” “I’m glad you like it. Let me know when you want to rest and I’ll take you to your room,” I told him before I sat down. “I can sleep right here,” he said and I chuckled. “Liar. You can’t sleep in an unscented room.” I rolled my eyes as a blush spread over his face. “Okay fine. But I can try,” he said but we both knew it wasn’t possible for him. As much as I wanted to focus on Wesley and his health, my mind kept drifting to my phone which was still in the kitchen and the text message my Master sent me. I didn’t want to know what he was capable of, but I knew there was no limit to what he could do. So when he said he’d be taking matters in his own hands I know I should be afraid. Adan Diamandis was no ordinary man. He could destroy you and everything around you in mere seconds and wouldn’t feel an ounce of guilt about it. He was responsible for my family and took exceptional care of us for as long as I’d known. But now he was angry and I didn’t even want to know what he’d do now. I could try and run. I wish I could do that. But he would find me. There was nowhere I could hide that he couldn’t get to me. And if I did, it would only piss him off even more. Then just give in to him. I think this is one demonstration you need to avoid. But how could I abandon Wesley? How could I break up with him when I had no reason to? I prided myself on my relationships. I balanced them perfectly and I had no recollection of breaking anyone’s heart in any way. But now Adan was telling me to do just that and he needed to understand I wasn’t capable of it. “I think I want to get some rest now. I want to watch the game tonight so it’s better if I rest up,” Wesley said, bringing my attention back to him. I helped him off the couch and into his bedroom. He was in pain but he managed not to drop all his weight on me as I helped him into bed and tucked the comforter up to his chin. “Sleep tight. Holler if you need anything,” I told him. “You’re not leaving, right?” He asked and I shook my head. “Not unless you want me to,” I said. “I don’t.” “Alright then. I’ll be here. But I do need to go to the grocery store and get some essentials. Is it okay if I take your car?” I asked and he nodded. “Of course.” “Thanks. I’ll be back in twenty minutes. I’ll take the house key with me, so that you’re safe,” I told him before walking out of his room and closing the door behind me. I left the house, making sure to lock it before getting in my boyfriend’s car and heading to the grocery store. Adan hadn’t left any more messages which was something I was grateful for. But that didn’t mean the danger had passed. I was still in murky waters but I just had to endure it. Adan would understand soon enough. He had to because there was no way I was breaking up with Wesley. The grocery store came into view and I parked the car and went inside. I grabbed a cart and filled it as quickly as possible because I needed to get back to my boyfriend. I paid for the groceries and checked my phone again before getting back to the car. The sun was setting by the time I got back to Wesley’s place. I unlocked the front door with his house key and stepped inside only to come a halt when my eyes landed on a red envelope lying on the ground. The strength seemed to leave me the longer I stared at it, until the grocery bags in my arms began to shake. I hurried to the kitchen and deposited the bags on the countertop before stepping out and picking up the red envelope with trembling fingers. Adan’s personal seal stared back at me and I swallowed hard before tearing the envelope and pulling out the letter. I read through the contents, fully aware of what it was that he wanted me to do now. The letter was a Summon. And he wanted me at the Diamandis mansion by this evening. If I failed to comply then he would send men to retrieve me. I was well and truly screwed. Seven o clock. That’s the deadline he gave me. I needed to be at mansion before then or else he would come after me. The logical thing to do was to answer the Summon and go to the mansion and obey my Master. But since my meeting I hadn’t been operating on logic. My emotions were ruling me and right now they wanted to throw this Summon in the trash and focus on Wesley. I really didn’t understand Adan’s problem. Why did he want me to break up with him? Did he have a man for me that he wanted me to marry? No way would I marry anyone I didn’t know or love and Adan couldn’t make me. I slammed the letter on the table beside me and went to put the groceries away. I’d decided I wouldn’t go to the mansion. I knew I was essentially committing a crime by disobeying my Master. He could throw me in the dungeon for the rest of my life if he wanted; that’s how much power he had over me. However, he had to understand my situation as well and if he knew me at all, then he’d know I valued relationships and stuck with them till the end. As soon as I finished putting the groceries away I decided to check on Wesley in case he was awake and needed something. I got the second shock of the evening when I entered Wesley’s bedroom and found him curled on his side and groaning in pain. “Wes!” I cried and hurried over to him. “Wes, what’s wrong? Where does it hurt? Tell me!” “I—I’m fine,” he groaned and I rolled my eyes at his pathetic attempt at trying to be strong when he was clearly in pain. “Wes, just tell me how bad is it. Should I take you to the doctor?” I questioned, but he just shook his head. “No. I don’t want to get surgery. I don’t want surgery,” he moaned and closed his eyes. I cursed under my breath and raked a hand through my hair as I tried to figure out what to do. There was only one solution to this and that was to take him to the hospital. He could die otherwise and I couldn’t let that happen. “I’m calling the ambulance,” I stated before calling the required service. The paramedics arrived in under five minutes and two men hauled Wesley’s body onto the gurney before wheeling him out of the house. I followed after them in his car and reached the hospital in less than ten minutes. I checked the time and gulped when I saw I had only one hour until I was due to report at the mansion. “I’m sorry, Master. But I’m not leaving my boyfriend,” I said to myself as I ran inside the hospital. The paramedics were taking Wesley straight to the OR so I had no choice but to sit outside an wait. Fortunately I saw the doctor who had been handling his case and rushed to talk to him. He was a man of average height with fluffy blonde hair and sharp brown eyes. “Doctor, will Wes be okay?” I asked as he walked in the direction of the OR. “Judging by his condition we need to perform surgery immediately, but hopefully he will be fine after that. I kept telling him to get it done as soon as possible, then it wouldn’t have come to this,” he told me. “I know. But he has his reservations…” I didn’t know why I was pleading his case but the words just came out. “He’s had some bad experiences…” “Well perhaps after this he’ll have a change of perspective,” the doctor said before giving me a soft smile and disappearing inside the OR. I huffed and began pacing the length of the corridor. I eyed the vending machine on the side with an assortment of snacks but my stomach was too tied up to care. I really hoped Wesley would be okay and after tonight we wouldn’t have to worry about this disease. My eyes kept darting to the clock which was hanging on the wall across from me and I gulped as I watched the hour hand move closer to seven. The deadline was approaching fast and I was still here. And when the clock struck seven and I took a deep breath and closed my eyes, knowing that I’d opened doors to the inevitable. “Let’s see how long it takes for you to find me, Master.”
