bodys in Clyde River
Glasgow, 13 April 1856
Six bodies were found in the River Clyde at 7.30 am. They were 4 women and two teenage girls. They were found by an elderly woman crossing the bridge. A large number of police officers also attracted a crowd of onlookers curious to see what was happening. The commander of Glasgow Police soon arrived. Upon seeing the crime scene he was shocked.
What the onlookers as well as the police saw could not believe their eyes. The bodies were massacred. People started asking questions about how it happened and who did it. There were many unanswered questions.
The commander nodded to one of his subordinates:
-Mr. Smith, can you describe to me what exactly happened?
-We don't have much information about this m******e. The bodies were found by an elderly woman, Mrs Lorane James, widow of Mr Jefferson James, a carpenter. According to her testimony, she left home at about 6.30 a.m. and walked to the bakery for fresh bread. As she walked along the river something caught her eye, her first thought being that it was trees or something dumped in the river. On closer inspection, she saw six bodies floating on the western side of the river. She immediately went to the police station to tell them what she had found.
-Did any other people see this? Did you find anything or anyone suspicious?
-No, sir. The only testimony is from Mrs James.
-Did she see anyone?
-Testimony says no, but she's still shaken up and in shock from what she saw. She's in a tragic state, she had a panic attack and fainted.
-Do you now have any information on the condition of the witness?
-No. As far as I know, Mrs James has regained consciousness and is in her home. I don't think we're going to hear anything more from this woman today. She's been traumatised and I doubt she'll be of any help now.
-Well, in that case, I'm going to ask you to contact Detective Amethyst West immediately, and I'm also going to ask Edinburgh Central Police to send Detective Inspector Arthur Green immediately.
- Yes, sir.
-And, Mr Smith, I'm asking you to go and see detective West immediately and bring her to me personally. Also, please notify Ms James that someone will be visiting here to ask questions about today's morning. Thank you and get to work. We have no time to waste.
-Yes, sir!
Constable Smith went straight to the Detective West flat.
