After dinner, Lazlo escorted me to the family carriage outside.
When we began our journey, Lazlo reached over and put his arm around me.
“I’d hoped to tell you about my trip before dinner. We arrived so late. I’m sorry I didn’t get to tell you first.”
“I was a bit surprised since you hadn’t ever said anything about wanting to go off and be a soldier.”
“Trust me. I don’t. But I’m hoping it will show Mother I can be valuable without being married into some rich and well-placed family.”
“Your family is so complicated. My only family rule is to have a child someday that can wield our spellbook.”
“I can help with that,” he whispered in my ear before delivering a soft kiss on my neck.
