Part 1 - Prologue
* * * 1000 Years Ago * * * “Order. Order. I will have order. Each of us will have a say and voice our thoughts and opinions, we must hear each other out. What is the point of a High Council meeting with all the Alpha’s present, if we cannot come together? Our people need us. And they need us now”, councilman Harold calls, above the babble of bickering. “And how would you propose we do this then, councilman?” The cocky young Alpha asked. “We have an agenda. We will discuss matters in order of the agenda list. Each Alpha will have their say. We will do this in a civilised manner, gentlemen, as adults and not petulant children, or we will not do this at all and the council will make the decisions,” Harold told them. “Very well. Let us get on with it. We need to put a stop to the s**t that is happening,” the cocky young Alpha spoke out again. “First on the agenda is the wolf hunters. Humans have figured out our weakness towards silver. They have developed numerous types of silver weapons. They have increased in numbers and are attacking wolves freely. Several packs have suffered tremendous losses. We must find a way to manage the human hunters,” Harold tells the group. “Too long we have sat idly by, maintaining our secret existence. Other species should fear us and give us the respect we deserve. We are gods among men and it should be known,” Alpha Edward spoke up. “I agree, we need to send all races a message that we are not to be messed with. It is not just humans hunting us, there has been an increase in vampire attacks, witchcraft used against us and humans hunting us for sport and experimentation. While we cower like household dogs with our tails between our legs,” Alpha Benedict spoke. “I have read the reports. Most of the casualties are rogue wolves; wolves without a pack, savage mongrels and omega wolves. They sustained injuries and fatalities because they are weak,” Alpha Wilfred said. “Is that so? I had only paid attention to the numbers, not their status. That is an interesting point. Weak wolves would obviously be more at risk of fatal injuries,” Alpha George agreed with the cocky Alpha. “Exactly, Alpha George. If there were no omega wolves. If all wolves were strong, this would not have happened. The attacks may have happened, but we would not have deaths of this magnitude. It is because of weak blood lines,” Alpha Wilfred speaks up. “Gentlemen, all wolf packs have a hierarchy. Each wolf and each rank serves a purpose to aid the functioning of the pack,” Harold tells them. “That is not enough. The problem is that they come from weak bloodlines. You can train them all you want, all that would happen is you would create a weak spot in our line of defence. If we pair them with a warrior, we put the warrior's life at risk. I am sorry, councilman, but training will not help our problem,” Alpha George responded. “I have to agree. A bad bloodline will always be a bad bloodline, no matter how you try to mask it,” Alpha Benedict agreed with Alpha George. “It is simple, is it not? We breed them out,” stated Alpha Benedict, seemingly bored with the conversation. “We declare it wolf law. Any wolf who is not ranked and is not a warrior will surrender themselves to be sterilised. We make sure that only the strong are allowed to reproduce,” stated Alpha Benedict, as though it was obvious. “They are innocent wolves, they could be harmed by actual rogues, packs for trespassing, human hunters and vampires. You surely cannot do that to your pack members,” exclaimed Harold. “I say we cast our votes on this matter, councilman,” Alpha Edward declared. “I Alpha Wilfred, vote yes” “I Alpha George, vote yes” “I Alpha Benedict, vote yes” “I Alpha Edward, vote yes” “Very well. I will draw up the papers. It is now wolf law that only ranked wolves and warrior wolves may reproduce. All other wolves must report to the nearest pack hospital for sterilisation. The papers will be sent to all packs. Once received, you may take action on it” Harold addressed them. Harold wanted to overrule and throw this bat-s**t crazy idea out of the window. But he knew the rules better than most. If all of the Alpha’s agreed on the matter, that was the final decision and the council had no say. The council were only there to step in when there disagreements. May the moon goddess have mercy on our souls, thought Harold.
