Friend
All the years of my life, music is my language of emotion. Music is the one that helped me get through my messy life.
As a musically inclined person, music is my medicine. It is my heart and soul and the one that completes me. And being a singer and music producer is the dream that I have always wished to achieve. But I never had the chance.
"Mom?" I called from outside of her office inside our house.
I've been knocking for I think ten times now but no one opened the door for me. I know that Mom is inside. I waited for her to come home and I saw her enter this room. That's why I took my only shot and now waiting for her to see me.
"Mom? Are you there?"
I wanted to stop because I might be disturbing her because she's not opening the door or maybe she fell asleep inside the office and she is very tired. That's why she decided not to move and go to their bedroom. But my motive of coming here will only take ten seconds. I just need her signature.
Once again, I knocked three times. I was about to knock again when the door suddenly opened and I saw my Mom's glaring eyes darted on me.
All of a sudden, I felt scared. I wanted to move my feet backward and run to my room and hide. I feel like I should just throw the paper I'm holding because what I'm doing right now is not making any sense.
"What?" Mom asked angrily.
"My teacher said that parents should sign it so we could be registered and-"
"What is this for?"
She took the piece of paper on my hand harshly that is crumpled a bit. I can't read anything with her expression. It is so serious that I think she will not agree.
"For our School Music Contest, Mom."
Her piercing eyes left the paper. Her gaze darted to me. I was about to let out a smile thinking that she might allow me to join but my world melted when I saw her hands slowly rip the paper for our registration.
Without saying any words, Mom threw the torn papers on my face and harshly closed the door. It was loud and had a very heavy impact that I made a few steps back. My tears began to pool in my eyes. My vision became blurry and I wanted to cry out loud.
I looked at the pieces of papers ripped on the floor. We have a Singing Contest in our school. I used to join when I was in Elementary. Even without the support of my parents. My teachers are always there beside me to guide me and play their roles as my second Mother.
I was given an early registration because my current adviser knows that I sing. Those who registered earlier than the day of the registration had the bigger chance of being one of the contestants.
We only need the sign of the guardians and parents. There are only four of us in the house. My parents, and my big sister. We haven't had a family reunion ever since I was a kid. I never knew our other relatives. I don't even know if I have one. I live my life without knowing any of my family other than us here in the house.
"What do you mean you won't join?" my best friend asked me once when we were vacant.
Our teacher is not yet arriving for our supposed class for today. My best friend is sitting beside me. She's always like this to gossip about what's happening around and about the news spreading in our school. She is always active with that.
"Mom didn't allow me,” I said sadly.
"What do you mean? She never allows you to do anything! Girl, you should live your life."
"It's not that easy, So."
"So what? You're just going to allow them to control your life that way? You can't even go outside and make friends. You are like a bird trap in a cage!" Sophia exclaimed.
Sophia has been my best friend since my third year in high school. One more year and we will be College graduates now. I just realized how fast the years go.
Sophia, being my best friend, knows everything about what is happening in my life. She is the witness to what all my parents have done to me. She is the only witness about how my family controlled my life. The reason why I don't have any friends other than Sophia.
I can even remember the first time we met. She wouldn't be my friend if she did not approach me.
"After school, you better go home immediately," Mom said so coldly.
That's what she always tells me everyday I go to school. Our family is high class. My Mom can even buy our school, I'm sure. I have a guard and my sister and I will be fetched everyday after school by our parents' car and a driver.
My parents own four companies and two of them ranked as the biggest company of all time. My parents are known for being strict. That’s why no one ever comes near me. Especially before when I have a guard with me who's always hovering behind me. I find it so uncool and very uncomfortable. But I can't do anything because that is what my parents want. And I have no say on that.
I was walking one time. It was after school and I was about to head towards our car to go home when I accidentally stripped. My face kissed the ground and the impact of my fall was carried by my knees. There were so many students around me who saw that and they all laughed at me. I saw our driver and my guard near me but they didn't move even an inch to help me. They were just standing there. I even saw my sister inside our car, laughing at me.
I can't get up. My knees were all in pain and aching. I felt my tears streaming down my cheeks but I didn't utter a word. I didn't ask for help. But help came for me.
A hand grabbed me by my shoulder and waist and helped me get up. A beautiful girl was struggling just to help me.
"Here, move your feet," I did what she said.
"A-ahm," I don't know what to say. This is the first time someone approached me like this.
I can't get over the fact that there are so many students laughing at me right now but one decided to come and help me.
"Is it very painful?" the girl asked.
I only nodded. I still can't get my senses back. I was caught off guard by her presence beside me.
"Should we go to your car?"
I glanced at our car. They are still there, only with the window closed on the back seat, I can't see my sister anymore. I answered the girl with a nod once again. I still don't know what to say.
The girl assisted me towards our car. The driver opened the door for me. Our driver did not say a word and was about to close the door even when the girl was still outside. Out of annoyance, I suppressed the closing of the car door with my hand. Our driver turned to me with his forehead furrowed.
"H-hi," the girl's face lightened when I opened the door. I felt shy but I need to express my gratitude. "Thank you."
She let out a sweet smile, "My name is Sophia," she offered her hand.
"Ehem," our driver faked a cough, reminding me that we need to go.
The girl looked at our driver. I feel so shy once again. I don't want her to feel that our driver is embarrassing her.
"I-I'm Emily," I accepted her hand for a hand shake.
"See you tomorrow, Emily," she smiled and started to walk away.
"Finally got a new friend, huh?" Amelia blurted as soon as our driver closed the car door.
I didn't say anything back. I remained quiet the whole trip to our house. Amelia, my sister, likes doing it. Annoying me and making me feel like I'm not a family. I was all alone back then, but that day changed everything.
That's how I met Sophia. After that day, we hang out like we are friends. Until everything I did was always with her, same goes to her, and then we became best friends.
She was my only best friend.
Nevertheless, I'm so thankful she never left my side.
