Lying on his back in the rear of the car, Daniel waited. And listened. The last of the rats had finished scurrying across the car’s roof, but he could still hear them up ahead, scrambling over and around the other abandoned vehicles on the motorway. The noise they were making, that insistent scratching and scrabbling of claws on metal and glass, was slowly growing fainter. Daniel had already decided that he wasn’t leaving his safe place until he could no longer hear the rats. At least he was on his own in this car.
