The two pterosaurs hurtled towards Daniel, filling in the blue sky with their dark, winged mass. The teenager felt locked in place, every muscle and tendon in his body tight and rigid. The rats were swarming across the roof and around his feet. Daniel was vaguely aware of Renton screaming, but his hoarse, cracked voice seemed to be echoing up from a deep well. The first pterosaur swooped past Daniel, almost knocking him over, and scattering the rats as it landed amongst them. The second was close behind and smashed into Daniel, knocking him down. Day turned to night as Daniel was smothered in a stinking, hot mass of leathery flesh. He threw his arms up to defend himself, choking and coughing on the rank, overpowering smell of the pterosaur.
