The Decision
Gabriel Cruz remained in the shadows, watching her. She was exactly as they had described: young, gorgeous, and the daughter of a powerful senator. But it was not just her beauty that drew his attention. It was the vulnerability in her eyes. The fear that emanated from her even in the midst of the party. She was out of place in this world of expensive suits and sparkling champagne, and Gabriel knew why. She was the target. His target. Gabriel’s hand tightened around the cold steel of the gun in his pocket. His orders had been clear: take her out. Simple. Clean. No questions. The senator had a deal with the wrong people, and the girl had to pay the price. He’d never failed a job before. He never thought twice about it. But this time. something felt different. The air felt too heavy. The lights too bright. With her back to him, he could see the smooth wave of her hair and the minute pulse of her neck. Something prevented him from pulling the trigger, even if his whole body begged him to. This was not how it was supposed to go. Her laughter echoed across the room, yet it avoided her eyes. She raised her glass, her fingers shaking, as Gabriel stared. She was terrified. Gabriel exhaled slowly. No. They had already put the plan into action. He had the ideal shot, the position, and the rifle. But the closer he came, the more difficult it was to fire the trigger. Though his training had prepared him for situations like this, it had never explained the resistance he now had. A flash of movement broke his concentration. The man by her side seems to sense the tension in the air. He turned to face Gabriel, his hand resting near the hidden pistol beneath his jacket. Gabriel’s hand instinctively moved toward his own gun. The situation was spiraling. He had to act. The door suddenly pushed open.. The noise of the party went still. Every eye turned toward the commotion. And then Gabriel saw it. Men in suits. Guns drawn. The panic that spread through the crowd was instant. Gabriel froze, and in that brief moment, a hand grabbed Elena’s wrist. The man was trying to drag her away. He wasn’t one of the men Gabriel was expecting, but that didn’t matter. She was being taken. This wasn’t supposed to happen. His target, his job was slipping away. Without thinking, Gabriel moved. He pushed people aside as he hurried through the crowd to get to the girl. Even though the chaos was getting louder, when he got to Elena, everything appeared to calm down. As she fought against the man holding her, her big eyes met his, but she lacked the strength to escape. Gabriel didn’t stop. He grabbed the man’s arm with a grip that could crush bone and pulled him away. The man lose his balance as he turned but Gabriel’s fist connected with his jaw before he could react, sending him stumbling backward. The crowd screamed, fled as the situation turned violent. But Gabriel didn’t care. He only cared about her. Elena. Her eyes were filled with terror, her body trembling as she pressed herself against the wall, away from the violence. Gabriel knew what she saw: the assassin standing before her, the assassin who was supposed to end her life. But for reasons he couldn’t explain, he wasn’t going to kill her. Not now. Not here. He grabbed her wrist, his grip was firm “Come with me,” he said, his voice low and eager. She didn’t ask questions. She didn’t fight. She followed. Running amid the confusion, they made their way to the dark corridor behind the mansion by the back escape. They were hit by the cool night air.. Gabriel didn’t slow down. As they ran down the dark corridor, his thoughts were racing with each step, and his pulse was pumping in his chest. The sound of gunfire from a distant came within the gathering. But Gabriel didn’t turn back. Elena was with him. And he didn't want to kill for the first time in his life. When they came to the street, Gabriel looked around. His car was waiting, parked close by, and running. After pushing her inside, he got in next her. Her voice shaking as she whispered, "Where are we going?" Gabriel took a while to respond. He had no plan, no destination. He had broken every rule. Every protocol. And now, they were running. Running from the people who had hired him, running from everything. He pushed the pedal to the floor, the tires screeching as they took off into the night. “I’ll protect you,” he finally said, his voice more to himself than to her. “But you need to trust me.
