CHAPTER 1 Beyond The Light
As I walked down the hallway, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. I quickened my pace, my heart still racing from the encounter. I decided to take a walk outside, clear my head, and get some fresh air.
The night air was warm and humid, but it felt refreshing after the stifling atmosphere of my apartment. I walked down the street, taking in the sights and sounds of the city. The streetlights cast long shadows, and I found myself glancing over my shoulder, half-expecting to see the shadowy figure from my apartment.
I walked for about 20 minutes, trying to calm my nerves. As I turned a corner, I noticed a small café still open. The warm glow of the lights inside was inviting, and I decided to step in for a cup of coffee.
The café was quiet, with only a few patrons scattered about. I ordered a latte and sat down at a small table by the window. As I sipped my coffee, I felt my anxiety slowly dissipate. Maybe I was just overreacting, I thought. Maybe it was all in my head.
But as I gazed out the window, I noticed something strange. The shadows outside seemed to be moving, twisting and writhing like living things. I rubbed my eyes, wondering if I was seeing things. But when I looked again, the shadows seemed to be behaving normally.
I must be going crazy, I thought. I finished my coffee and decided to head back home. As I walked out of the café, I caught a glimpse of a figure standing across the street. It was tall and imposing, and it seemed to be watching me.
My heart skipped a beat as I quickened my pace. I didn't dare look back, fearing what I might see. I rushed back to my apartment building, my hands shaking as I unlocked the door.
As I stepped inside, I felt a sense of relief wash over me. I locked the door behind me and leaned against it, trying to catch my breath. But as I looked around the darkened apartment, I realized that I wasn't alone.
The shadows seemed to be moving, twisting and writhing on the walls. And in the corner of the room, I saw a figure standing just beyond the edge of the light. It was the same figure I'd seen outside the café, the same figure that had been watching me.
I tried to scream, but my voice was frozen in my throat. The figure didn't move, didn't speak. It just stood there, watching me with an unblinking gaze.
And then, everything went black.
As I came to, I was lying on the floor, my head throbbing with pain. I groggily sat up, looking around the room. The shadows seemed to be back to normal, and the figure was nowhere to be seen. I rubbed my head, trying to remember what had happened.
Had I fainted? Had I dreamed the whole thing? I stumbled to my feet, making my way to the kitchen to get a glass of water. As I stood at the sink, I caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of my eye.
A piece of paper on the counter caught my attention. It was a note, written in red ink: "I'm always with you."
My heart racing, I spun around, but I was alone in the room. Who had written the note? How had they gotten into my apartment? I felt a chill run down my spine as I realized that I might not be safe after all.
I tried to shake off the feeling, telling myself it was just a prank. But the note seemed so... sinister. I folded it up and stuck it in my pocket, deciding to investigate further.
As I walked back to my living room, I noticed something else strange. The window was open, and the curtains were billowing in the breeze. I could have sworn I closed it before I left for my walk.
A sense of unease crept over me as I realized that someone might have been in my apartment while I was out. I quickly checked the rest of the apartment, but nothing seemed to be missing.
As the night wore on, Sarah suggested we watch a movie to take my mind off things. I agreed, and we picked a light-hearted rom-com to try and lift my mood. But as we sat on the couch, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched.
Every time I looked around, I expected to see the shadowy figure standing in the corner of the room. But every time, there was no one there. Sarah noticed my distraction and put her arm around me.
"Hey, it's okay," she said. "You're safe with me. Nothing's going to happen."
I smiled weakly, feeling a little better. But as the movie played on, I started to feel a creeping sense of dread. It was as if something was building, something that was going to change everything.
And then, just as the movie was reaching its c****x, the power went out. The room was plunged into darkness, and I felt a scream rising in my throat.
Sarah grabbed my hand, her voice calm. "It's just a power outage, Emily. It'll come back on soon."
But as we sat there in the darkness, I knew it wasn't just a power outage. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong.
Suddenly, I heard a faint whispering in my ear. It was soft at first, but it grew louder, more urgent. "Get out while you still can."
I jerked away from Sarah, my heart racing. "What did you say?" I whispered.
Sarah looked at me, confused. "I didn't say anything," she replied.
The whispering grew louder, more insistent. I knew then that I wasn't imagining things. Something was really happening.
And then, just as suddenly as it had started, the whispering stopped. The power flickered back on, and the room was bathed in light once more.
Sarah looked at me, concern etched on her face. "Emily, what's going on? You're really scaring me."
I took a deep breath, trying to calm down. But I knew I couldn't tell her the truth. She wouldn't believe me. "I don't know," I said finally. "I think I just need to get some rest."
Sarah nodded, but I could tell she didn't believe me. As she left, I knew I was alone in this. And I wasn't sure how much longer I could keep it together.
The darkness seemed to be closing in around me, and I knew I had to find a way to fight back. But how?
