Chapter 8: I Disagree!

1321 Words
The police arrived very quickly. By the time Hannah returned with the buns, they were already on site. Two young officers stepped into the hospital room and first asked who had called them. Huan's son hurriedly raised his hand, "It was me! My name is Hank Pg, and my dad has been beaten!" The two officers scanned the room; apart from the other two patients in their beds, there were no others present. "Did the person who harmed your father flee?" Hank pointed at James lying on the bed: "That's him! My dad was beaten by him!" The officers were taken aback; this old man's age was probably greater than Hank's father; how could it have been him? They inquired of James, "Sir, did you strike this man?" James looked over at Huan, who still bore the shoe prints on his face as evidence of the altercation. "How can you say I hit someone? I just taught him a lesson for running his mouth off and spewing nonsense all day." The two officers exchanged glances, puzzled; wasn't that still considered hitting? Huan was furious and shouted at the young officers, "What kind of police are you? Hurry up and arrest him and put him in handcuffs!" Hank chimed in, "Officer, quickly restrain him; he's a dangerous criminal!" The duo continued their concert of claims, urging the officers to apprehend James, as if he had dismembered Huan instead of simply striking him. One officer raised his voice, "Everyone, calm down! We need to understand the situation before making a judgment." Outside the room, a crowd of curious doctors and patients had gathered, peering inside. Seeing the onlookers spurred Hank and Huan on even further. "Everyone, look! There are shoe prints on my dad's face!" Hank cried, pointing. "Yet the police say they need to investigate? Isn't it obvious? I think the police are deliberately covering for the criminal!" The two officers frowned, feeling pressured but unable to force Hank to silence himself. Then James suddenly spoke up, "That's right; I'm the one who hit him, and the shoe prints are from me." One officer sighed, "Then why did you hit him?" James shrugged casually, "He has a loose mouth, so I gave him a little smack. It's that simple." Hank tugged on the arm of one of the officers, "Did you hear that? He's admitting it! My dad didn't provoke him, and he just went ahead and struck him; where is the law here?" Huan, lying in bed, mimicked a wounded man, dramatically clutching his face and moaning in pain. The officer pulled Hank's hand away, "We're performing our duty; please refrain from physical contact." Hank released his grip, protesting, "I just tugged on your arm! He struck my dad a hundred times!" "Come on, Dad!" Huan yelled, "They're not taking this seriously!" The commotion in the room grew louder. Just then, Hannah squeezed her way into the room with the buns, exclaiming, "Officers, Uncle James had a reason for hitting him; I can explain!" Hank pointed an accusatory finger at Hannah, his face flushed with rage, "What do you mean 'explain'? My dad was beaten up, and now you're bearing responsibility?" "If you don't provide me a solution, this isn't over!" Tears streamed down Hannah's face; while it was true that Huan had made unreasonable demands and verbally assaulted James, why did the blame shift onto her? Hank continued to yell, "Quit faking your tears! My dad said you're in cahoots with this old man." James pulled Hannah's hand, siting, "Let me handle this, kid." Hannah trembled with anger, "Uncle James, your health..." James revealed his diagnosis report, "It's precisely because I'm in poor health that I'm more suited to handle this situation." With a tone tinged with sadness, he added, "Since I've not got much time left, I might as well take one of them with me; let's see who wants to accompany me!" With that remark, everyone in the room fell silent. One officer took the diagnosis report from James's hands and examined it, noticing the alarming details within. With such a severe medical condition, anyone else would struggle to even move, yet this old man still had the strength to hit someone. Turning to Hank, who was utterly oblivious, he asked, "Are you sure you want to press charges?" Hank examined the diagnosis report skeptically. Upon glancing at the details, his brows furrowed. "This must be fake! I've never seen someone so ill have that much strength!" Hannah cried out, "That can't be fake! Uncle James is in that state, so why are you targeting him?" At that moment, a doctor who had been observing from outside entered the room; he had treated James the night before. Upon seeing the doctor, Hannah quickly pleaded, "Doctor Zhao, you performed the examination on Uncle James last night. Please tell them that it's legitimate!" Dr. Zhao glanced over at Huan's family. He was responsible for all the patients in the room and well aware of how difficult this father-son duo could be. "Last night we conducted a full examination on this patient, and his condition is indeed very poor." Dr. Zhao's words confirmed the authenticity of the diagnosis report. However, Hank raised the report defiantly, "Even if it's true, I want him dead in jail!" The two young officers, being new to the force, had never dealt with such a complex case before. They were definitely reluctant to take any forceful measures against James given his dire health situation, and the fact that only a few slaps had been exchanged didn't warrant him being forcibly taken away. The primary issue was the difficult dynamic with the Huan family. One officer suggested, "We recommend that both parties engage in mediation." "I refuse!" Hank, Huan, and James all shouted in unison. The father-son duo was momentarily taken aback; they didn't want mediation, they wanted harsh punishment for James. But why did James refuse, then? Did he not want to face repercussions or to pay for damages? James indeed did not want to pay; providing money to this duo would be an insult to him. The two young officers found themselves in a bind; they had no choice but to call for backup. About five or six minutes later, Janet hurriedly arrived at the hospital. She was the mentor of the two young officers. Outside the hospital room, one young officer detailed the situation to Janet. "Neither party accepts mediation?" The young officer nodded, "Neither is backing down." Janet sighed; cases involving elderly patients were always the hardest to manage, especially when one had a poor prognosis; it made things even trickier. No wonder her disciples had summoned her. "Let's go in and assess the situation further." When she entered the room and saw James lying in bed, Janet gasped, "Uncle James? What happened to you?" 【Ding】 【Received surprise from Janet, increasing lifespan by sixty days.】 James smiled; it was a pleasant surprise—he might have to thank this pair from the Huan family. Huan and Hank were both perplexed, wondering why everyone seemed to know this old man. James chuckled, "Sorry to trouble you with a trip." Janet replied, "It's no trouble; that's my job. But Uncle James, why were you being violent?" James rubbed his palms together, "I'm old and sometimes let loose; sometimes, a bully needs to be dealt with, and I'm willing to be the villain." Hank yelled, "You can act tough against my dad, but why don't you dare challenge me?" James picked up a vase from the bedside table and hurled it toward Hank, "Here's your chance to be a hero!" Hank reacted quickly, dodging the vase, "Officer, did you see that? He's actually trying to assault me!" No one in the room spoke up, but they all thought the same thing—wasn't it you who provoked him in the first place?
