Bound by Vows
Sophie Knight stared at the enormous diamond ring on her finger, the weight of it far heavier than she had imagined. It sparkled under the golden glow of the chandeliers in the grand ballroom, a perfect match to the lavish wedding dress she wore. Everything about this night screamed perfection—except for the man standing beside her. Ethan Sinclair. Tall, dark, and dangerous. The man who now called her his wife. His hand rested lightly on the small of her back, a touch that felt more possessive than affectionate. The reception hall was filled with people—business moguls, politicians, and men whose wealth came from blood-stained deals. They all sipped champagne, murmuring their congratulations, but Sophie felt like a prized possession on display, not a bride celebrating her happiest day. Ethan leaned down, his voice a low whisper against her ear. “Smile, Sophie. They’re watching.” She forced a small smile, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “I didn’t realize I was marrying a dictator.” A ghost of a smirk touched his lips. “You knew exactly what you were getting into.” Sophie swallowed the retort burning on her tongue. No, she hadn’t. Not really. She had known her parents had sold her off in an arrangement that would save their struggling business, but she hadn’t known just how cold Ethan could be. He was polite, charming even, when necessary, but there was something about him—something ruthless lurking beneath his perfect exterior. And now, she was bound to him. “Sophie,” a familiar voice cut through her thoughts. Her best friend, Claire, appeared beside her, wearing an overly enthusiastic smile. “I need to steal the bride for a moment, Ethan. Bride stuff.” Ethan’s icy blue gaze flickered to Claire before he nodded once. “Don’t take too long.” Sophie exhaled a breath of relief as Claire pulled her away from the crowd, leading her to a quieter corner near the floor-to-ceiling windows. The city lights twinkled in the distance, but they did little to calm the storm brewing inside her. “This is insane,” Sophie muttered, pressing her hands to the glass. “I’m married to him.” Claire gave her a sympathetic look. “It’s not forever, Soph. You’ll figure something out.” Sophie let out a bitter laugh. “You don’t get it. Ethan Sinclair doesn’t let go of things he owns. And right now, that includes me.” Claire’s eyes darkened. “Then don’t let him own you. Play the role, and bide your time. You’re stronger than you think.” Sophie wished she believed that. Before she could respond, a presence loomed behind her. She stiffened, already knowing who it was without turning around. Ethan’s reflection appeared in the glass, his expression unreadable. “We have guests, Sophie,” he said smoothly, his voice a perfect mix of charm and command. “I’d hate for them to think my wife is unhappy.” Sophie plastered a smile on her face as she turned to face him. “Of course not, darling,” she said sweetly, slipping her arm into his. “Let’s not keep them waiting.” But as they walked back toward the crowd, Ethan leaned closer and murmured, “Good girl.” Sophie’s nails dug into his arm, but she kept smiling. --- Later that night, the reception wound down, and the guests slowly trickled out. Sophie stood in front of the massive bed in their new home—a luxurious penthouse overlooking the city—feeling more like a stranger in her own life. Ethan stood by the window, his jacket discarded, the top buttons of his shirt undone. He looked every bit the powerful man he was, but tonight, there was something heavier in his gaze. “You’re quiet,” he remarked without turning around. “I’m processing.” Ethan finally looked at her, his sharp blue eyes assessing her in a way that made her feel exposed. “You had plenty of time to do that before agreeing to this marriage.” Sophie crossed her arms. “I didn’t have a choice.” His lips curled into something that wasn’t quite a smile. “There’s always a choice, Sophie. You just made the one that saved your family.” A bitter laugh escaped her. “And what about what I want?” Ethan moved toward her slowly, his steps deliberate. “You want a fairytale, Sophie. But in my world, fairytales don’t exist.” She swallowed hard, refusing to be intimidated. “Then what do you want from me?” Ethan’s hand brushed a strand of hair from her face, his touch surprisingly gentle. “I want you to play your part.” His voice was softer now, almost coaxing. “Be the perfect wife. Smile when necessary. And stay out of trouble.” Sophie stared up at him, a mix of defiance and fear swirling in her chest. “And if I don’t?” Ethan’s expression darkened. “Then you’ll regret it.” The threat lingered in the air between them, and Sophie felt a shiver race down her spine. This was a game of power, and she was already losing. --- As Sophie lay in bed that night, staring at the ceiling, she couldn’t ignore the sinking feeling in her gut. She was trapped in a marriage with a man she barely knew, in a world she didn’t understand. And the worst part? She had no idea how to escape. Just as Sophie closed her eyes, a phone buzzed on the nightstand. She glanced at Ethan, who was asleep beside her, and reached for it. Her heart stopped when she saw the message flashing on the screen. "RUN. HE'S NOT WHO YOU THINK HE IS."
