Jane Jenkins (POV)
I was so concerned when we had to head back to the packhouse without our mates.
“They will be fine,” Lari says, as if reading my mind. “They are warriors. They know how to fight.”
I sigh. I know she is right. I have seen them train. Along with the Beta Wayne, all three and the lead warrior are the best fighters. “I know. This is the first time since Lucas and I mated. It is normal to feel this way.”
“Don’t worry, love. I have been training with them, and they are the best.” My father reassured me. He was sent back with us to ensure our safety.
We had just shifted back and put on some clothes as we spoke. The shifters have wooden boxes around the pack territory with extra shorts and T-shirts just for this reason. That is going to take getting used to.
“If something was wrong, you would feel it through the mate bond,” Lari again assures me.
Yes, the mate bond, I need to get used to that. For one, I can feel Lucas’s emotions, so if he ever does get hurt, I guess that makes sense. Back at the packhouse, we help around with Lari being the Luna she is. We have many who are weaker and need reassurance that the packhouse is safe. Lari tells everyone that Drake mind-linked her and said everything is under control. That the danger had passed and that the men were on their way back. When I heard that, I ran outside to wait for Lucas.
Once I saw him walking and chatting with Drake, I ran up to him and threw my arms around him.
“I was so concerned,” I said in his ear.
“I am fine, love. It wasn’t a bad one. We had gotten it under control in no time,” he said, kissing the top of my head.
“I am still new at this mate thing,” I say with a giggle.
“I know you are, love,” he says as I peek over his shoulder. I see Diana glaring at me.
“Let’s go inside,” I said as I took his hand and we both entered the packhouse together.
‘I saw Diana,’ I began to tell Lucas through the mind-link. ‘She was standing among the trees, glaring at me.’
‘I will let Drake know. He told her to go and help with the clean-up. Seems she decided to follow us back instead.’ He squeezes my hand.
‘She sure wasn’t happy to see us together.’ I leaned closer to him as we walked into the dining hall.
He chuckled, ‘I bet she wasn’t.’
We sat at the table with Drake and Lari as our food was brought to us. Lucas’s eyes went glassy just as Drake's did, and I could tell they were mine—linking with each other. Drake’s Beta, Wayne, was still out with the warriors, seeing to the clean-up of the dead rogues. Lucas opened a mind-link to me.
‘Drake is assigning Wayne to see to Diana, since he is in the loop for what she tried to do to me.’
I nodded my head. ‘Good. I wouldn’t want her to try anything to separate us.’
‘That won’t happen. I love you too much to allow it,’ he responds.
‘I love you too, Lucas,’ I said and squeezed his hand as we continued eating our late breakfast.
Later that day, Aurora wanted to meet Spartis, her mate, and complete the mating on their end. The last part makes me blush because I know what that means. From what Lari tells me, werewolves are s****l beings. I am beginning to understand that.
Drake has ordered double the warriors around the perimeter of the territory, so Lucas feels safe enough for us to go on a run this evening. Aurora is excited about being with her mate. Well, I suppose he is my mate too, as they share the same body. Just as Aurora and I are. This is going to take some getting used to.
‘Don’t you worry, you will get used to this,’ Aurora says in my mind.
I smile. ‘I look forward to it. Tell me, will shifting the next time be as painful?’
‘No, each time we shift it will hurt less, until you won’t feel it at all.’ She answered me.
‘Good, then I am looking forward to it.’
‘Is that what was concerning you? The pain?’ she asked.
‘Well, shifting the first time hurt like hell, then shifting back to human hurt too. I want to get to the point where I can shift with no pain.’ I answered truthfully.
‘We will get there soon enough.’
“So, are you ready to go on our run?” Lucas asked, wrapping his arms around me from behind.
“You bet I am. Aurora is all excited about this.”
“So is Spartis. He is already in love with her and you,” he said with a kiss to the back of my head.
‘Tell him I am also in love with them both.’ Aurora said all smiles with her tongue lolling to the side. I assume this is how wolves smile.
I giggled, “Aurora said she loves you both, too.”
“Then let us go for our run,” Lucas said, leading me out the door.
“Have fun, you two,” Lari said while Drake smirked at us with a knowing smirk.
I blushed even more as Lucas smiled and answered, “We will.”
