Lucas Walters (POV)
She is so beautiful. I feel proud to be her mate. I can tell already that she is special. I am watching Jane’s family welcoming Aurora. Everyone is so happy, and I can’t wait to go on a run with my mate.
‘I think we should all go for a run and get Jane used to being in her wolf form.’ I suggested through a group mind link.
They smiled, “Great idea.” Drake said as he looked at his mate, Lari.
“I agree!! After all, I can still safely shift until my fourth month.” She said, sounding excited. “Come on, let’s go.”
We headed toward the tree line of the forest, and I looked away as the others undressed and shifted. I can feel the excitement of Jane through the mate bond. Once shifted, we then began our run with a very happy Aurora and Jane.
After an hour of our run, I heard Jane through the mind link to us all.
‘This is great! Now I understand why you all liked to run.’ She began to laugh in her joy.
Not long, I began to scent a smell quite familiar. Diana. But I also smelled rotten, dead meat.
‘Rogues!’ I exclaimed.
‘I smell them.’ Drake said through the link. ‘Lari, take your mom and sister back to the packhouse. I will alert the warriors.’
‘Okay. Stay safe, my love.’ I heard the concern in Lari’s voice.
I nuzzled Aurora’s muzzle. ‘I love you,’ I said as she whimpered.
‘Please stay safe and come back to me.’ She answered with concern.
‘Always, my love.’ I watched as she and her mother followed Lari back to the pack house. Then I mentioned to Drake, ‘I smell Diana near too.’
‘I know. I hope she is not in trouble. I will try and mind-link her.’
I nodded as she became quiet as he tried to mind link her. ‘She is okay. She claims she is heading back once she smells the rogues.’
Again, I nodded as the warriors showed up, and we took off in the direction of the smell where the rogues were.
We discovered they were coming through the southern border. We found two patrol wolves slaughtered. That was how they got through.
‘We need to separate,’ began Drake, ‘Spread out and make sure they don’t get to the packhouse. They could be anywhere by now.’
‘Yes, Alpha.’ The warriors said as they headed off to find the rogues that got through. There were around fifteen to twenty that showed up. When rogues enter, there are usually not many, so we had more than enough warriors to do a clean-up job, as I like to call it.
It didn’t take too long for the sounds of fighting to rise in the air. It didn’t take long before Drake and I ran into a few rogues that happened to surround us in attack formation. About six altogether.
‘Ready, Luc?’ Drake asked, getting into a fighting stance.
‘Ready, boss,’ I hear Drake growl at the boss's remark as I get into my battle stance.
Just then, two of the six came at us to attack us. Those were an easy kill. The last four surrounded us and came at us from all sides. But Drake and I were faster and stronger and took them down with ease. We still heard the warriors fighting the last few and went to join and finish them off. It didn’t take long, and soon we were surrounded by the bodies of rogues.
Drake issued an order to gather all the bodies and burn them. Among the bodies, we heard a groan. One was still alive.
“And take this one to the cells for questioning,” Drake ordered.
“Yes, Alpha.” A warrior said as he bent down and took the injured rogue by the arm and half-carried and half-dragged him off toward the cells.
As the reason for this big a rogue attack was beyond me. I hope we can get an answer from the surviving rogue.
Drake was thinking the same, “I hope he will talk. We need answers. This is not like them to attack in this large of numbers.
“I agree. Something is up and we need answers. I don’t believe this was random at all.” I said as he nodded as we turned to head back to the pack house.
“I will give the rogue until tomorrow to heal enough before we ask questions.” Drake was a good alpha and knows how to interrogate rogues, and he usually gets them to talk. Let’s hope this will be no different.
I am just anxious to get back to my beautiful mate. Along the way, we hear a rustling in the brush and out pops Diana, “Oh, goddess, you are okay. Did everyone get out safe?”
“Diana, what are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be at the packhouse with the others?” Drake asked.
“I was concerned about you two. I was almost at the pack house when I thought I might come back and help. You know, I trained with the warriors. I am not helpless like some.” She said with a fake concern. I know her, and now I can see her true colors. As for the some she was speaking about, I knew it was a jab about Jane.
“We had everything under control. Run along now, we don’t need you,” I said as we began to walk toward the pack house. I wasn’t in the mood for her right now. I only want to get back to Jane.
Drake, sensing this, said, “If you want to help, go help with the cleanup, then go home.”
She looked at me, then Drake, “Yes, Alpha.”
Alone and out of hearing range, I whispered, “I don’t trust her. I know she is up to something.”
“Yeah, I agree. We need to keep a closer eye on her.”
I nodded as we got to the pack house, and someone ran and jumped into my arms. Feeling the sparks and tingles tell me who it is, and I wrap her in my arms. Goddess, do I love this woman!
