Chapter 6
Layla Patel

As I opened my eyes, my gaze wandered around an unfamiliar room. The sterile smell of disinfectant filled the air, making my stomach churn. It didn’t take long before I realized I was in a hospital.
I tried to sit up, but a sharp pain shot through my head, making me wince. I fell back to the pillow, my mind racing with different unanswered questions.
What happened to me? How did I end up at the hospital? Who had brought me there?
I let out a relieved sigh when the room door finally swung open. I watched as a nice-looking lady in a white lab coat walked into the room. I guessed she was the doctor.
“What am I doing here?” I asked before she could even say anything.
A wide smile was plastered across her face. “Don’t stress yourself, sit back on the bed.” She instructed calmly as I tried to get up again. “You don’t want anything to happen to the baby.”
My eyes grew wide in surprise. “What? What do you mean?” I asked, my voice laced with confusion.
The smile didn’t leave her face. “Your baby, Mrs Brown. You’re about a month pregnant.” The excitement in her voice was palpable.
I felt a wave of different emotions course through me.
“It can’t be. I can’t be pregnant. Lucas…” I stopped my sentence midway, realizing that the last thing I could remember was when I had showed up at Lucas’s office and saw him with Sophia.
I wanted to talk to him about the divorce, but everything went black before I could even speak. Where was Lucas? Why wasn’t he present at the hospital with me?
“Is everything okay?” The nice doctor asked.
I shrugged my shoulders, still trying to process what was happening. “Where is my husband?” I asked, my eyes darting around the room.
“I have no idea, ma’am.” She responded politely but that wasn’t the response I wanted to hear. “I think your driver brought you here.”
I held back a scoff. So Lucas didn’t even care to bring me to the hospital by himself, even after I passed out right in front of him? He really didn’t care about me.
“What were you saying about a baby?”
Lucas always used protection whenever we had s*x. He also made sure I took my birth control pills. So I assumed I couldn't get pregnant.
But if I actually was, then I guess it was a good thing. Maybe Lucas would change his mind after realizing that I was carrying his baby.
“Oh yes!” The doctor exclaimed. “You are one month pregnant.”
“Are you sure?” I raised a brow at her, skeptical. “Take the test again.” I wanted to make sure it was actually true and not just misinformation.
The doctor brushed off my concerns with a simple wave. “You don’t have to worry, I already took the test like three times.”
I narrowed my eyes on her. “Just do it one more time.”
She raised her hands in surrender. “Fine, if you insist.”
I stayed still while she took out some of my blood with a syringe. When she was done, she took the sample to the laboratory to carry out another test.
While I waited for her to return, I saw that my bag was on a table. I stretched my hands to reach it. A small sigh escaped my lips as I retrieved my phone from the bag.
I was hoping to see calls from Lucas, but I let out a disappointed scoff when I realized that he hadn’t even left a call or text message.
Either way, I still decided to call him.
I watched as the phone rang multiple times without any response. My heart sank as I realized that he could be with Sophia.
My mind wandered back to the morning when I had bumped into them as they acted all lovey-dovey with each other. I closed my eyes momentarily as I pushed that image away.
I kept on calling Lucas’s phone but he still wasn’t answering.
At one point, I decided to rest and try later.
Shortly after, the doctor returned with the test results. It turned out I was actually pregnant. My hands subconsciously shifted to my stomach.
As I rubbed my stomach, I couldn’t stop thinking about the fact that I was about to be a mother. I was about to give birth to Lucas’s daughter.
I couldn’t wait to share the good news with him.
“Congratulations.” The doctor said with a wide smile.
“Thank you,” I responded with a smile.
“You still need to rest for a while. I’ll ask the nurses to get you something to eat.” The doctor was really nice and accommodating. “In the meantime, I’ll be at my office.”
I nodded.
After the doctor left the room, I picked up my phone and called my best friend. I wanted to share the goodness with her. Besides, she had left me numerous texts, asking me to call her back.
As I called Olivia, she answered on the first ring. “Layla, where are you?” She asked with a hint of concern and curiosity in her voice.
“I’m at the hospital.”
“What? I’ve been trying to reach you since. What are you doing at the hospital?” She asked with a hint of urgency in her voice. I could tell that her worry was rising.
“Calm down, Olivia. You sound so worried.” I replied. “I’m fine, stop panicking,” I assured her.
“What? What are you doing at the hospital if you’re fine?” She demanded, her voice barely above a whisper.
I smiled. “I’m pregnant with Lucas’s baby.” I couldn’t contain my excitement. “He won’t have any reason to leave me now,” I added, letting out a satisfied sigh.
“Oh my goodness, Layla!” Olivia exclaimed and my face formed into a frown. Why wasn’t she happy for me? “That’s bad. That’s really bad.”
“What? Why is it bad?” I asked, my voice getting defensive.
“Lucas just made his proposal to Sophia public.”
