Chapter 7
Layla Patel

“What?” I asked, my voice cracking slightly.
Lucas already mentioned something about proposing to her, but I had no idea it was so soon. I hadn’t even signed the papers. Technically, we were still married.
“Yes, Layla. Send me your location, I’ll meet you at the hospital.”
“But what of the baby? Our baby?” I asked, my voice barely audible.
“Layla! Just send the location. We will talk about everything in person.” Olivia added with a sense of urgency in her voice.
I exhaled heavily and nodded. “Okay, I’ll send it right away,” I responded with tears in my voice. After the call ended, I sent Olivia a PIN of my exact location.
I was tempted to check the news, but I knew it wasn’t a good idea. I was already hurt and looking at the comments would break me even further.
My heart was racing as I thought about everything. I felt an excruciating pain in my chest that wouldn’t go away. I decided to try Lucas’s number again.
Maybe he would finally pick up.
I couldn’t hold back a scoff when I called multiple times and he still didn’t answer. Why was he so heartless? He knew I was at the hospital and he didn’t want to talk to me or even check up on me to see if I was doing fine.
Since he wasn’t responding, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Even with the pain I was feeling - both physically and emotionally, I forced myself to climb out of bed.
I dragged my feet over to the door and just as I was about to open the door, someone beat me to it. “Where are you going?” A nurse asked with a confused expression registered on her face. “You’re meant to eat and rest.” I looked down to see she had a tray full of food.
I didn’t have any appetite to eat. I wasn’t interested in resting either. I wanted to go back home and find Lucas.
“I need to leave here.” I shoved her aside and tried to walk out of the door but she held me. “Leave me alone!” I screamed, attracting attention to the room.
“Ma’am, you’re not in the right state to walk. You have to stay on bed rest.” The nurse was still calm as she spoke to me even after I pushed her.
But I didn’t care. I was determined to leave the hospital and find Lucas. Olivia wouldn’t let me leave if she eventually arrived, so I needed to do it before she got to the hospital.
I kept on walking even though everywhere felt dizzy.
Other nurses tried to stop me but I refused, pushing myself forward with every single strength I could gather. When they saw that I wouldn’t listen to them, they had to call the doctor.
“Mrs Brown, you are endangering your health!” She warned, her voice stern. “Please, allow the nurses to take you back to your room.”
“Mrs Brown?” I muttered to myself with a scoff. For how long? Mr Brown doesn’t want me anymore. “I need to save my marriage!”
Just as I was about to take another step, I staggered and fell to the floor. Then, everything went black again.

The next time I opened my eyes, I saw Olivia sitting beside me. She had a disappointed expression registered on her face as she saw I was awake.
“You wanted to leave? Where to exactly?” She asked, the frustration in her voice palpable. “What was your plan?” She added without even giving me the chance to say anything.
I let out a loud yawn. “I’m sorry. I had no idea what I was doing.” I let my emotions control me and didn’t even think before climbing out of bed. “I just wanted to tell Lucas about our baby.” My stomach churned as I realized that he hadn’t even been answering my calls.
“I understand, but you have to make your health your priority. You can’t leave here until you’ve fully recovered.” Olivia advised.
Olivia let out a deep sigh and looked at me. I could tell she wanted to say something else but was contemplating whether she should speak or not.
“What’s the problem? Why are you staring at me?” I asked.
She closed her eyes momentarily and cleared her throat. “I don’t think you should keep the baby.”
“You want me to get rid of the only thing keeping Lucas in my life?” I questioned, clearly disappointed by her suggestion.
“I mean, right from the jump, he has always made sure to take all the precautions that would prevent you from getting pregnant. What makes you think that a baby will keep him?”
I knew that Olivia had my best interest at heart. I knew she was being honest with me. But I still needed to try my luck. Who knows if the baby would make him change his mind and reconsider the divorce?
I couldn’t just get rid of the baby. I’ve always wanted to be a mother. I couldn’t just let the opportunity slip away.
I shrugged my shoulders. “I wouldn’t know until I try,” I replied.
Olivia ran her fingers through her hair, struggling to come up with something that would make me change my mind. But at that point, nothing could make me change my mind.
I was determined to tell Lucas about our baby. I hadn’t signed the divorce papers so everything was going to be okay.
“Please, I need you by my side. I just want to fight for my marriage.” I continued as I pleaded with my best friend. Even if she wasn’t in support of my decision, I wanted her to stay with me every step of the way.
Olivia let out a defeated sigh but smiled afterward. “You know I’ll always be by your side.” She assured me, reaching out to my hands to give them a comforting squeeze.
“Thank you.” I smiled. “I’ll text to tell him about the baby.” Since he wasn’t responding, I needed to send a text message instead.
Olivia nodded. “Yes, you should do that.”
