Embarrassing

Chapter 8 Layla Patel ~•~ I stayed in the hospital for exactly forty-eight hours. Yet, Lucas didn’t even care to reach out to me. I even texted him about the baby, but he ignored my text. I tried calling him a few more times but he still didn’t answer. I felt so devastated. Olivia had been by my side throughout everything. She even put her other activities on hold, just to stay with me at the hospital. “Are you ready to leave?” Olivia’s voice interrupted me from my thoughts. “Yes,” I responded, running my fingers through my hair. The doctor had discharged me but she asked that I visit the hospital regularly, so they would keep an eye on my baby. Olivia assisted me as we both walked out of the hospital. “Are you sure you want to go back to that house? You can stay at my place instead.” Olivia asked as we settled down in her car. She didn’t want me to go back to Lucas’s house. But I didn’t want to listen to her. Maybe Lucas would have sympathy for me after seeing me in person. I shook my head. “I want to go back to Lucas’s house.” Olivia let out a low sigh and nodded her head. “Fine.” I knew she didn’t want to drive me there but she had no choice. The rest of the ride was silent. I couldn’t help but think about how hectic the past few days had been. I wasn’t ready for something like this. I wasn’t ready for my marriage to end. I wasn’t ready to be pregnant. I was happy about the baby, but I didn’t see it coming. A few minutes later, we arrived at the house. My heart raced in anticipation as she drove into the compound. Lucas’s car was parked in the garage, so it meant that he was at home. “Thank you, Olivia.” I smiled at her as I stepped out of the car. “I don’t know how I’ll ever repay you,” I added, feeling grateful for her support. Olivia brushed off my concerns with a dismissive wave. “It’s fine.” She assured me. “Don’t hesitate to call me if you need anything.” “Sure.” I waved her goodbye and watched as she drove out of the gate. As soon as she left, I turned around and made my way to the front door. When I got into the house, I made my way upstairs to the room where Lucas and I shared. As I stepped inside, I noticed that everything was looking different. Most of my things were missing and had been replaced with strange things. I just dropped my bag on the bed and went outside to find Lucas. On my way downstairs, I ran into the maid. “You’re back?” She asked, her voice laced with surprise. I nodded. “Yes, where is my husband?” I asked because I wasn’t seeing any sign of Lucas. She hesitated for a while but only continued speaking after I gave her a little nudge. “He is with Sophia at the office downstairs.” I closed my eyes momentarily as I let out a deep breath to calm myself down. “Thank you.” I forced a smile and made my way to the room. As I got to the door, I could hear muffled voices coming from the room. I knocked on the door loudly. “Lucas, come outside!” I tried to keep my voice steady to prevent myself from breaking down. The room went silent. “Open up!” I didn’t stop knocking even though nobody responded. “I will break the door if I have to.” I threatened, my voice rising in anger. A few moments later, I heard footsteps coming towards the door. I let out a deep breath as I waited for someone to open the door. “Layla, what are you doing here?” Lucas asked as the door swung open. “You’ve finally come to sign the papers?” His nonchalant attitude only fueled my anger. I scoffed. “I have been calling you for days. I sent you numerous texts, but you’ve been ignoring me because of that woman?” I pushed the door wider and saw Sophia sitting on the desk, a smug expression on her face. “Layla. Don’t bring her into this.” He stepped out of the room and closed the door. “I told you to sign the papers, but you refused.” “I’m not ready to give up on this marriage. I’m not ready to give up on you.” I responded, my voice cracking slightly. Lucas sighed, rubbing the back of his head with his hands. “It doesn’t matter what you want. I can’t do this anymore. I don’t want to continue with the marriage anymore.” There was no hint of remorse in his voice as he spoke. My heart sank. “What of the promise you made to your grandmother,” I asked, staring at me. Lucas let out a dry chuckle. “She is gone, I don’t have to keep the promise anymore.” “Oh,” I muttered to myself, my disappointment palpable. “What of the baby? Did you see the text about our baby? I’m one month pregnant.” I rummaged through my bag and brought out the test results. Lucas laughed, a burst of cold and mocking laughter. “I knew you were desperate to be with me, but I never imagined that you’d stoop so low.” His statement felt like a blow on the face. “What do you mean?” “You had to seek the help of a doctor to lie to me about being pregnant.” He didn’t even care to look at the test results. “We both know it isn’t possible for you to get pregnant, Layla.” “I know but I’m not lying! I was also shocked when the doctor told me.” “Yeah, right.” Lucas laughed again. “Just sign the papers and leave the house. I’ll give you all the money you want to start your life.” I held back a scoff. “I don’t want your money, Lucas. I just want you.” Lucas’s expression turned cold. “You want me but I want Sophia.” He replied. “Just sign the papers and stop embarrassing yourself here.”
