"Boss it was indeed Jeremy Lincoln behind Ms. Lucy's accident. He made it look like a hit and run but we found the owner of the car whose tire traces we found near her car. The car belonged to his colleague who was executed last month for attempted rape." Salim finished what he had found in the last two days.
"Why he had his colleague's car?" I asked sitting up, suddenly interested in what more he had to say.
"Boss I am not a hundred percent sure but many scenarios lead to Jeremy somehow involved in the r**e case." He rubbed the corner of his eyebrow. "I am still digging into it. There are many loopholes that I found in the case and some things were either missing or overlooked." He finished with a hard frown.
"Who was the victim of r**e?"
He hesitated. "Mother of Jeremy boss."
My heart sank at the mention of the r**e of a mother. She did not deserve this. No one ever deserved it.
I looked out the window, a thin layer of clouds masked the full moon, filling the room with blue light. The crisp air and cloudy sky energizing my thoughts.
"How is Rhodes?" Despite my cold persona, I still had an ounce of sympathy running deep within my veins. He was my employee, it was my responsibility to look after his basic needs and at that moment he needed medical care. However much I tried to blame Rhodes, it was not his fault in the end. He was himself hurt in this crazy s**t.
It had been two days since the accident and my hands were itching to slice that bastard's face. He was a f*****g nuisance since the day he barged in our lives. I never trusted his guts or ever liked him. I thought he was just a harmless jock my sister was dating like every other month and will be kicked out once she is fed up with his ass but I was so wrong. He came into our lives with the sole intention of destroying them.
I found out a little too late that he wasn't just a peasant, but a f*****g member of a downtown gangster. It was a f*****g disappointment then too when I failed to protect her.
"He's doing just fine boss. Will be joining from tomorrow." I nodded.
Rhodes was my shoulder, he was the only man I trusted in this world. That was the only reason I sent him after my sister for her safety but he failed. I was in no place to blame him for my sister's accident. It was very unexpected. We weren't prepared.
"Good. He will be handling that bastard. I already have enough on my plate." I grumbled, suddenly very exhausted.
"Where is he hiding?" I questioned wanting to know where did that pig took refuge.
"He is continuously traveling the city boss. Not staying at one place more than two days." He informed and I nodded, deep in thought.
He knew we were after him or was there anything else we were not aware of?
"Schedule a meeting with Draco for tomorrow. Inform Rhodes, he is going to lead it." I further told.
Draco was the current leader of the criminal organization running in New York. I had no direct business with him but I knew him from different parties I used to attend and came across each other many times.
"Noted. Anything else sir?" He asked politely.
"Yes. Ask Roman to get the car ready. I'll be heading to the hospital next." With that said I dismissed him with a flick of my fingers.
Jeremy came into our lives uninvited, just to create havoc and nothing else. He had no intentions of marrying Lucy. Just f*****g around with her. She was a fool in the first place to fall into his trap. He just needed to get in our lives, for what? I had no idea. I still needed to dig into his past. There must be something that I was not aware of. I just hope this meeting with Draco tomorrow comes out fruitful.
"Sir you have a meeting with Mr. Enzo in half an hour." Selena, the receptionist who was filling in the place of Rhodes these days popped her head in.
"Reschedule it, Selena. I am leaving for the hospital." I picked up my mobile phone from the desk and shrugged on my suit jacket.
"Very well sir." She passed me her professional smile. "And how is Ms. Lucille doing?" She asked.
"Recovering." One word, but still felt heavy on my tongue. It was something I had no control over. She was my baby sister for f***s sake. I was bound to get worried.
"May she gets well soon." I nodded, lost.
"How's the baby doing?" I eyed her big bump. She chuckled with a hand on her belly.
"Very feisty." She replied with a snort. That is what I liked about her and kept her around. She didn't flaunt herself at me. She was never interested in me or my money. Always keeping a distance whenever we met.
I just hummed.
With a small smile, she stepped out, closing the door softly behind her.
Selena was very dedicated to her work that is why I kept her around me. Due to her condition, I had given her a job as a receptionist. She was pregnant and used to work tirelessly which wasn't good and I wasn't a heartless man so I offered her that job when she refused to take maternity leave. Her boyfriend dumped her when she found out she was pregnant with his child and since then she was devastated.
Heading out of the building I took a seat at the back of the awaiting car, and Roman peeled the car off the side.
Reaching the hospital, I made my way inside. Like always, it stank of melancholy and medicines. It was not as deserted as the past two days I was visiting. And seeing it flooded with people distressed was not a sight to see. However, it was one of the best hospitals in the city and funded by me.
"Good morning sir." That is what I heard as I passed people, doctors, or nurses. That was right, they knew me well, who I was. I nodded at different people's greetings before coming to a halt in front of one particular private room.
I hated going inside and look at my sister, almost lying lifeless on a hospital bed.
