Chapter 9 My mother finally told me about the St. Croix trip nearly a week after Paul spilled the beans and she did it in such a casual way that I would have missed it if I hadn’t been paying attention. She called one night to tell me about my grandmother’s knee surgery scheduled next month and before she hung up, she said, “Oh, and Paul and I are spending a week in St. Croix at the end of the month, so I’ll need you to come by and check the mail and keep an eye on the house while I’m gone.” “Do you need a ride to the airport, too?” I asked in a voice that was more sarcastic than intended. “No,” she said without a hint of anger in her voice. I figured she was either ignoring my sarcasm or had failed to notice it. “Paul’s going to drive us and leave his car in the long-term parking lot.”
