Carmen stopped by my apartment to see me that night. We hadn’t talked much since I’d spent the night at her place after my mother’s birthday party. I’d been purposely avoiding her because I didn’t want to slip up and say something about Paul that I’d regret later. I’d sworn to him that I wouldn’t tell her or anyone about our relationship and I hadn’t. Of course, that was before he’d decided to take my mother out of the country.
