Vena
She moved her hands to massage the dull ache in her temples.
But she couldn't remember when she slept so deeply.
Last night's memories swarmed her mind. Sitting up quickly she scanned the room. She wasn't tied up anymore.
But he was there at the small table. It was moved closer to the door. He was asleep. His head over his folded arms on the table. Her eyes darted to her suitcase. She needed her new identification. Also the gun. Inching slowly off the bed she winced as the floorboards creaked. She rifled through it but just came up with clothes. Damn it!
She'd have to figure something out later.
Eyeing his sleeping form she moved slowly around him toward the door. She was close enough she could reach out and touch the handle.
'Vena.'
Her spine stiffened at the firm warning tone that came from behind her. Without looking back she yanked on the door but it didn't budge.
'Kind of hard to go through a locked door without a key.'
Turning Vena glanced at him. A key on a thick piece of string dangled from his fingers.
'I did some remodeling while you were asleep. Also some other things too.'
Eyeing the window to her left she was actually prepared to slam through it. She was just about to dart when hand jerked her hips back.
'Let me go!'
She was lifted and placed in a chair at the table.
'Stay.'
She watched as he turned toward the cabinets behind him.
'I bet you're hungry.'
Well she was actually. But what the actual hell.
'Yeah I thought so. Someone as skinny as you has to have an appetite.'
She bristled.
A bowl of cereal was placed in front of her.
'Eat up. We'll talk afterward.'
Not feeling like much choice she dug in. She felt him watching her. Her eyes would connect with his before darting away as she ate.
'Finished?' He asked as she placed the spoon in the empty bowl.
'Yes. Can I go now, please?'
'Answer my question.'
'Fine.' She sighed.
'Your name is Vena?'
'Yes.'
'Then why are there documents saying your name is Piper.'
'How did you know my name is Vena?'
'Tsk. I asked first.'
Rolling her eyes she continued.
'They are fake documents obviously. I'm …I sort of ran away from home.'
His brow furrowed. 'How old are you?'
'Nineteen.'
Now his eyebrow raised. 'I'm no lawyer. But I do know the legal age is eighteen.'
She squirmed.
'I ran…because I had no choice. That little detail of legal age meant nothing.'
'So this Victor, he's who you're running from?'
'No. It's my turn. How did you know my actual name? You said you didn't work for Victor. So…?'
'I heard you talking to yourself when you were changing the tire.'
'So…what? You were stalking me?'
'No. It was…you could call it coincidence, that I found you there.'
Her memory before she woke up tied to a bed was kind of a blur. She remembered something about glowing eyes. A wolf?
'Did you see…an animal too?'
'Ah. My turn, remember? Who's Victor?'
Slumping in her seat she folded her arms.
'Biologically speaking, he's my fathers brother. In my terms, he's the biggest piece of s**t that walked the planet.'
'Oh? Now this gets interesting.' Johnathan leaned forward. 'Why?'
'How come that porcelain didn't faze you at all? You barely flinched.'
'I'm more durable than most. Why do you despise him?'
She looked away.
'Pass. Next question.'
'Now now, sweet Vena. That's not part of the rules.'
'What rules? You never made any. Ergo, next question.'
Laughing softly he sat back and assessed her.
'Alright. Besides your uncle, do you have any other family?'
'Biologically, no. But I do have friends that I saw as family. But I can't see them ever again.'
'Why?'
'What do you want with me, Johnathan?'
Smiling, he stood and paced around her.
'It's a very long story. But short version, I've been waiting for you for four years now. Actually my entire existence but I really wasnt looking until four years ago.'
'What?'
'Why can't you see your friends again?'
'They…sort of work for Victor. Forced labor is more accurate. What are you planning on doing with me?'
He sighed and sat in the chair next to her. 'I know what my instincts tell me to do. But I really don't know right now. I made a call last night. One that may answer that question.'
'I don't understand.'
'Be patient. Did he hurt you?'
She hugged her knees to her chest at the brutal memories of the beatings, slaps, and cruel punishments.
'Yes. I left not just for me. But also to find help for my friends. The women there…they helped raise me for the last eight years. They need me. It's why I need to go.'
'All right, Vena. I think that's enough questions for now.'
'I can go now?'
'No.'
She stood up so fast the chair tumbled behind her.
'What?! That wasn't the deal?'
He stood over her.
'What deal? We never made a deal. Ergo, you stay.'
