Convenience

~I'm sorry you guys to leave you hanging. I've really wanted to update for quite some time but my life has been so busy. I've also been stuck lately. But I have been jotting down ideas whenever they come. I'll try to bring out another chapter soon. Thank you again for your understanding.~ Vena The pounding in her head along with the foul taste in her mouth were the first offenses her body woke to. The second was the nausea in her stomach. Prying her eyes open, she squinted in the dim lighting. Noticing the curtains were drawn.Getting up slowly she made her way to the bathroom. Blurry memories of the previous night assailed her mind as she washed her hands and face. Her cheeks burned when she vaguely remembered her tugging his pants open. Gasping she covered her eyes in mortification and the sight her mind conjured. ‘Oh God.’ She whispered to herself. After taking a cleansing breath, she squared her shoulders before reaching for the door handle. ‘...we’ll be heading there soon, after we’re married.’ She stalled at the sound of Johnathan’s voice. Who was he talking to? Inching the door open she peeked out. He was seated at the table with his back to her with a phone pressed to his ear. ‘Yes, she agreed last night. I want everything binding and done right in both worlds.’ A pause before he let out a frustrated breath. His voice had taken on a cold edge. ‘No. They've been gone or silent since she showed up. Look, Cassandra said my mate was my cure. You said when I found her I could come home. Cassandra spoke the truth. Did you, brother?’ The coffee machine beeped signaling it was done brewing. She watched him stand and pour two cups full. He caught her standing there. ‘We'll speak again soon, James. I have to go.” He spoke without breaking eye contact with her. Tucking the phone in the pocket of his jeans he smiled at her. Putting the coffee pot back in the machine he gestured to the two full coffee cups. ‘Good morning. Cream or sugar?’ ‘Um…morning. Cream and two sugars…please.’ Seating herself down at the table she waited. ‘Who was that?’ His smile turned sour. ‘My brother.’ He gently sat the cup in front of her. ‘James? From the story you told me?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘And?’ He shrugged. ‘He knows I've found you and after we exchange vows I'll be returning to my world with you.’ ‘What about my family? Will he be assisting?’ He shook his head. ‘No. I want him kept out of this.’ She sipped her coffee while mulling over all the information she had. ‘But he is king. Right? Alpha.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘So wouldn't it be smart to get him on board? If he is king that means he has an army at his disposal. If you combined your people that you said would help with his people, wouldn't that be the best move?’ ‘No.’ He gritted. ‘He doesn't need to get involved.’ She took another sip while eyeing him. ‘He threw you out, this older brother of yours?’ ‘Yes.’ ‘Do you not want to ask him for help because of your pride or pettiness?’ His eyes narrowed. ‘Vena, these are humans we will be wiping out. It won't take much. Even if this Victor had over a hundred men, it would only take less than half of that amount from my side to do the job.’ Sitting back in her chair she kept staring at him while thinking. ‘This is my family we are saving. All the help, I think, would be welcomed. I just hope you are not letting your pride stand in the way.’ An after thought occurred she added, ‘Can bullets hurt you?’ He sighed. ‘Unless they're silver, no. It's more of an annoyance than pain.’ ‘So once we get to this place of yours, what will happen?’ ‘What do you mean?’ ‘Where will we live?’ ‘In the castle. After all it is my birth right as well as my brothers.’ ‘You plan on living there? With your brother?’ ‘Yes. Why wouldn't I?’ She shrugged in confusion. ‘After all you've told me I assume there will be tension. Maybe some awkwardness. Why put yourself in that?’ ‘Like I said, it's my birth right too.’ She shifted in her seat as a fear formed in her head. ‘You…aren't planning to…do anything to your brother or his wife again were you?’ She saw his fists clench on the table. ‘No Vena. Why are you asking me that?’ ‘Well the story you told me, then the army that you're rising, that I'm also assuming you haven't told your brother, your eagerness to get home, and you are clearly holding on to some hard feelings. You don't strike me as the type to let some things go.’ He stood and looked down at her. ‘What are you doing, Vena?’ She held up her hands in a placating motion. ‘I’m just preparing for what's to come. With what you said your brother did to you last time, I'd hate to see what he does to me by association if he even thinks your up to something. I’ve got enough problems to deal with. I don't need to be placed in some family melodrama.’ ‘You will be my wife. That means we'll be partners. I will shelter you and protect you but you will be part of this family and all that comes with it.’ ‘No Johnathan. I agreed to your terms. But this marriage will be one of convenience. That's it.’ He sneered. ‘Didn't feel like that from your actions last night.’ Now she stood. Anger and embarrassment flooding her. ‘That was a drunken low moment for me and kind of pathetic of you if you think anything different.’ She turned to stalk off when he grabbed her arm and spun her to face him. ‘Do you want to know what I think, Vena? I think you want me just as much as I want you. I think you know that too. Yes, your inhibitions may have been lowered last night but that just proves it.’ She raised a dark brow while chuckling. ‘Inhibitions? You mean standards?’ ‘Oh right. You prefer strangers in a bathroom for a quick f**k!’ She slapped him. ‘Go to hell!’ She wrenched her arm free as tears sprung in her eyes. She slammed her way back in the bathroom. Why was she crying? She was tougher than this. She learned not to cry out when Victor or one of his men beat her. So, why was this man's actions and words making her cry? How could that one remark hurt her and make her feel ashamed? All she wanted to do was get a peek inside his head at what he planned. Wiping the tears from her face, she straightened up. Served her right. That will teach her to confide in him about anything personal from now on. She said it herself. This was going to be a marriage of convenience, so she had to start thinking of this as a business deal. Nothing more. She showered, taking her time in washing her hair, stalling, not ready to face him. But when she left the bathroom he wasn't there. A chair was broken across the kitchen floor and the door was flung open. Rolling her eyes, she began to get dressed. She was surprised to find a new outfit in her suitcase. A velvet green jogging suit. Maybe he'd realised she preferred comfortability over style. Thinking of not wearing it in spite had occurred to her but the thought of putting on her dirty sweat repulsed her. He had yet to show her where to do laundry. She stole one of his muscle tank tops and threw it on and tied it in the back. Zipping up the jacket she had to admit it was a cute outfit. Hours passed and he was still gone. Trying to busy herself, she cleaned up the broken chair and placed it in the burn pit in the backyard. She made herself something to eat when she really had no appetite for it. While she sat picking at her food, she got angry at herself. What the hell was she doing? She did nothing wrong, so why was she feeling guilty? Pushing herself from the table, she put on her shoes and decided to go for a walk. She'd love to go for a drive but she knew Johnathan would have hid her keys well. Chuckling, she imagined him burying them like a dog would with a bone. Before leaving she scribbled a note so he wouldn't freak out and charge after her like a rabid animal. Went for a walk. V Walking through the front door, she started out in the fall air towards the trees. As she walked she contemplated her next move. What ever it was she kept reminding herself it was all for her family. They were worth it. She'd sacrifice it all. Even her life.
