Vena

Vena The map was crumpled up in the passenger seat and completely useless to her sleep deprived brain. What she wouldn't give for a GPS system. But unfortunately it was the many new rules she had to live by now. No tracking devices whatsoever. It's why she was driving the old beat up cutlass ciera she had swiped two states behind her. Inconspicuous and it was easy to unlock and hot wire. Another rule. She had to have been driving in circles for at least an hour now. All these dark roads looked the same. If she didn't stop soon she'd run out of gas. The thousand dollars she had left that was with her new fake I.D. had to be rationed. At least until she got to Maine. She'd planned to get the first job that came to her and work from there into the next step. Through the darkened horizon up ahead she saw lights up ahead. Yes! A bar. Perfect. She'd stop and ask directions. Her stomach growled as she drove closer. The aroma of food teased her. Maybe she could also get something to eat. Also use a bathroom. The apple and crackers she had last night was long burned out of her system. She'd make a point to stop at a*****e tomorrow and refill her supplies. All that she taken and slowly stashed away in the weeks of her leaving was either gone or had gone bad. But no complaints would ever be heard from her. She was free. Free from all that kept her and the man that was planning on keeping her in the very near future. But most of all from the biggest abusive bastard of them all. A shudder ran through her at the thought of him. Shaking off the thoughts she pulled into the packed parking lot of the diner. She grabbed the map and smoothed it out before folding it and putting it in her back pocket. Getting out and walking quickly to the door she had an uneasy feeling pass through her. Something wasn't right. Call it paranoia but she could feel it. Looking slowly around she scanned around her. All she was trees and dark skies surrounding the place. Dimly lit by a few scattered street light posts. It felt like someone was watching her. She knew that feeling all too well. She had grown up with it since she was thirteen. Quickly scrambling inside she nearly bumped into people. 'Sorry.' She muttered before going to the bar. 'Hi. Welcome to the showdown. What can I get you?' The bartender greeted cheerfully. Venna eyed the name sewn on the right breast of her black shirt. 'Hi...M..Milly? I-I um...what's good to eat?' She managed to whisper. Her senses going into overdrive. Her appetite forgotten. 'Burgers and onion rings are popular.' 'Great. I'll take it to go.' 'Everything on it?' 'Yes.' 'What can I get you to drink?' 'Just water please?' 'Okay. I'll be right back.' I took out the map from my back pocket and smoothed it out on the bar. Hopefully someone here could help her. Seizing her opportunity she used the womens bathroom quickly. By the time she came back the bartender came back with her water. 'You said your order was to go? 'Yes.Thank you. But can you help me find a route that gets me closer to Maine?' Milly furrowed her brows before smiling. Flipping her bar rag over her shoulder she walked closer. 'Sure sweetie.' Taking out her pen in her apron she traced the map. You are right here. If you follow this road you'll hit the interstate-' 'No interstates.' Milly looked at her in confusion. 'I-its just I avoid interstate as much as I can. They…kind of give me anxiety. Back roads are better for me.' 'Oh. I see. No problem. My sister-in-law is the exact same way. Alright. So you can follow this road for about twenty minutes, take a left, then there will be signs that should guide you the rest of the way.' 'Thank you.' 'No problem. Your food will be ready in a few minutes.' The sooner she put the rest of roughly three thousand three hundred and forty one miles of distance behind her the better. Only five hours left to go. Thank God! She desperately wanted a shower and a soft bed to sleep in instead of the back of a car on the side of the road. The short blonde wig she was wearing itched and felt sweltering on her head. The clothes she was wearing were all too big. Again, it was a small price to pay for freedom. There was no way they'd look for her in Maine. Far too "primitive" as they'd call it. She knew he'd expect her to run to a bigger state with a higher population. 'Here you are.' Jumping at the sound of a Millys' voice next to her. 'That comes to fifteen dollars even. If you want to pay up front I'll meet you there.' Twenty minutes later she carried her food to her car. Starting the car back up she followed the map. Opening the styrofoam container with one hand she began to eat. Og God! It tasted like heaven. Swallowing the last bite she began to eat her onion rings while watching the road. 'Okay. She said take a left in about fifteen minutes?' She mused to herself. The car suddenly sagged to the right and the loud sound of slapping echoed. What the hell? Pulling over she quickly got out. Her tire was deflated. Getting out her flashlight she inspected the tire more closely. The tire cap was off. She looked around again nervously. That feeling of unease never left her. But it amplified now. Quickly she got in the trunk to root around for something that could help. Luck would seem was with her. Because inside the trunk was a tire iron and a jack with a spare. Living with men had its perks. Yes most were deviants but she still picked up some useful things from watching them. Her arms ached as she finished pumping the car up. She had just got the wheel bolts off when she heard a rustle behind her. Swinging around she quickly moved the flashlight back and forth. All that was there was trees and a feild. 'Keep your s**t together Vena.' She scolded herself. Piper! She had to get used to using her new alias. Pulling the tire off she rolled out the new one. She was finally putting the bolts back on when she heard the unmistakable sound of a growl. Standing up she pointed the flashlight again at the trees. Her heartbeat was about to beat through her chest. Lifting the tire iron she held it in the air waiting to swing. Without taking her eyes off the scene in front of her she put everything in the trunk. Maybe it was just a coyote or something. Slamming the trunk closed she brushed her hands off on her Jean's. Checking the tire one more time before starting around the front of the car to get back in. When she heard it again she knew it was right behind her. Slowly turning around she saw a huge wolf behind her. Her eyes widened. Fear paralyzed her. Its eyes bright in the darkness. Its head went to her shoulder. It just stared at her. But its body was tense. It looked like it was ready to pounce. Adrenaline unfroze her. Screaming, she turned to dive through the open car door. She felt her ankle swiped back, effectively tripping her. She felt the rough hard road meet the side of her head. The last thing she saw was the headlight shining in her eyes.
