Her new friend is a reclusive billionaire, hiding secrets just as deep as her own; his loyal right-hand man falls for her steadfast spirit. Shocking revelations unfold, including the truth about the glamorous fiancée of the CEO: Katherine's long-lost sister, with a vendetta against their family, turns her world upside down. Consumed by a need for revenge, her sister will stop at nothing to destroy the CEO's legacy-even if it means ripping apart the lives of those close to her. Snared in a world where love collides with betrayal and redemption, Katherine must untangle her feelings between two men while digging deep into the dark secrets of her past. But just as she feels that place found for herself in this new life, she wakes up to the rude reality-that it was all just a dream. Her uncle's wife, reminding her that it is Christmas Eve, leaves Katherine to face the truth of the matter-maybe her aspirations would not come true in real life, but she is to strive for her dreams. Will she garner the strength to face her ghosts and choose the love that will make her truly happy, or will her past continue to torment her? On the journey of self-discovery, Katherine learns that even though not all wishes may come true, the power to shape one's destiny is in the hands.

Chapter One - Fate in the City
The morning mist was just starting to lift as the sun rose up over the trees, and the village was quiet; it was a small, peaceful village. This had constituted my life, day in and out: predictable, almost to a suffocating degree. Not today, though. I was off to the city today. Church was the official reason, but in fact, it was just a routine at St. Mary's Cathedral. But somewhere in the depths of my brain, I knew it was more than that. The city beckoned, being a place of opportunities, success, and everything else that seemed beyond one's grasp from within this teensy-weensy corner of the world. I had grown tired of the same routine, the same faces, limitations, and everything else that came hand in hand with village life. The city was my means of escape. I had been on the long and bumpy ride of the bus, narrow country roads twisting through forests and fields before giving way to sprawling highways leading into the heart of the city. Closer, the tall buildings came in sight, with their glass exteriors glazing from the morning sun. My heart fluttered in anticipation. Here is where I belong; here, my path awaits. But as the bus entered the city limits, we encountered what never crossed our minds. The traffic, which had moved along reasonably well, suddenly stopped. The honking of horns was continuous, as if it was never going to move another inch further. I leaned out of the window to get a better look, my curiosity now stimulated. There, before my very eyes, was this slick black sports car that had been left across the road, blocking the way. A crowd had built up, watching this woman in her designer dress, oversized sunglasses, scolding with a police officer. I could tell from my faraway distance that she was somebody-somebody who got her way. "That's Olivia Dunlopee" a whispered voice breathed behind me. "She's engaged to the CEO of Donovan Industries." The name made my ears perk up. Donovan Industries was the most powerful company in town, and its CEO, Anthony Donovan, was as wealthy as he was elusive. His fiancée, it seemed, was every bit as entitled as the rumors said. I watched as Olivia continued her tirade, her voice shrill and commanding. The officer was trying to reason with her, but she was having none of it. Finally, she threw her hands up in frustration, got back into her car, and sped off, leaving the officer and the rest of us in her wake. The bus started up again, but my mind kept replaying the scene. The presumption. The arrogance. It just got my goat. People like Olivia Dunlopee did whatever they wanted, never really taking anyone else into consideration. It wasn't right, and it now made me more determined than ever to get out of this situation. I felt ill at ease when I came into the church. It was as if everything went by in a blur, and my mind kept drifting back to what I had witnessed. I kneeled down and started to pray for something else-for a way out of the life I'd always known, for an opportunity to prove myself. By the time the service was over, I had not gone directly back to the village as scheduled but found myself walking aimlessly along the city streets, my head filled with all kinds of possibilities. I knew I couldn't go back, not after seeing what life could be like outside of the village confines, and I had to find a way to make it here in the city. That was when I saw it: the towering glass building that housed Donovan Industries. Just the name itself sent a shiver down my spine, a promise of the power and influence situated inside those walls. My heart went racing as I neared the front, my mind made up. I would get a job at Donovan Industries. I would do whatever it took in the name of building a reputation, proving I was more than some girl from a small village. I walked through the revolving doors, feeling the cool lobby air hit me. The inside was much more striking than it had seemed from the outside-sleek, modern, full of people that justifiably looked like they belonged in a world I could only dream of. The receptionist looked up as I approached. Her voice was polite but without interest. "Can I help you? "I am here to apply for a job," I said, still trying to keep the nervous tremble from my voice. She raises one eyebrow. "Do you have an appointment? “No, but I’m hoping to speak with someone about an opportunity.” Her expression didn’t change. “You’ll need to submit your application online. We’re not accepting walk-ins at the moment.” My heart sank, yet I just couldn't allow them to defeat me. "Is there somebody I could talk to? Just for a few minutes? I will do anything. She sighed, clearly unimpressed by my persistence. “Wait here. I’ll see if someone from HR is available.” I watched as she picked up the phone, speaking quietly into the receiver. Moments later, she looked back at me, her expression unchanged. “I’m sorry, but HR is currently in a meeting. You’ll need to apply online.” I thanked her-the disappointment in my voice muted-and I turned to leave. But in doing so, I obviously wasn't watching where I was going, and I promptly stumbled right into someone. "I'm so sorry!" I exclaimed, looking up to see a tall man with dark hair and sharp features staring down at me. He was immaculately dressed, his suit tailored to perfection. It's all right," he said with a deep silken voice. "No harm done.". I had stumbled backward, my face aflame with embarrassment. "I really didn't mean to—" He brushed off my apology with a slight smile. "It's all right. You are in a hurry." "I was just… I was trying to apply for a job here," I said, probably foolishly under his gaze. Is that so?" he said, interested. "And how did it go? "Not well," I said, turning back to the receptionist. "I was told to apply online, but I was hoping to speak to someone in person." He nodded, his eyes contemplative. "It can be tough getting your foot in the door at a place like this. But persistence is everything. I was taken aback and didn't know whether or not to continue talking with him, but something about him was disarming, and I found my voice speaking before it could take hold. "I just want an opportunity to prove myself. I'm willing to work hard-to do whatever it takes." He eyed me a moment, then smiled. "That's the kind of determination we like to see around here. Why don't you tell me more about your background?" A glimmer of hope darted through me. "I'm Katherine, by the way. I don't have a lot of experience, but I'm willing to learn. I'm from a small village, but I have always dreamed of working in the city. He listened patiently as I recounted my situation, my dreams, and my determination to make it. He nodded in approval when I finished. "Tell you what, Katherine," he said, "why don't you give me your documents? I'll make sure they get to the right people." I blinked, hardly daring to believe my luck. “Really? You’d do that for me?” He smiled again; something around the eyes was inscrutable. "Of course-I am one who would give an opportunity to. One never knows where talent may be hiding.". I quickly handed over my resume and cover letter, my hands trembling slightly. “Thank you so much,” I said, gratitude swelling in my chest. Don't mention it," he said, folding the documents under his arm. "I'll make sure you're given full consideration. Just be patient, and you might hear something soon. I nodded, unable to hide my excitement. "Gracias again. You've really made my day." As I turned to leave, he called after me. "Katherine? “Yes?” I asked, looking back. “Just remember, sometimes the path to success isn’t always straightforward. There may be obstacles, but keep pushing forward. You’ll get there.” I smiled, feeling hopeful for the first time. "I will. Thanks again." As I stepped out of the building, my heart was lighter than it had been in weeks. Who that man was I did not know but was very thankful for his kindness. Little did I know our paths were going to become much more entwined than I could have ever imagined.
