Chapter 6: The Choice in the Storm
That night, although the misunderstanding between Qiu Ze and Lin Xiao had been cleared up, their relationship still remained under a cloud of uncertainty. Despite Qiu Ze’s sincere attempts to make amends, Lin Xiao’s calmness had not fully dissipated, as if the c***k between them continued to silently widen in their hearts. Lin Xiao had become more silent, no longer sharing her thoughts with Qiu Ze as she had before. She still maintained a certain distance from him, as though he had not fully regained her trust.
A few days later, Qiu Ze received an important design contract—one he had dreamed of for years. It was a huge breakthrough in his career. Yet, just as he was excited, he received news that cast a shadow over his mood—Lin Xiao was about to leave the city and go abroad for a six-month art exchange program.
The news hit him like a heavy blow to the chest. Though their relationship had not yet reached the most intimate stage, Qiu Ze knew that her departure would increase the distance between them even further, and it might be impossible for them to get closer again. Her departure was not only her choice, but also a massive test of their relationship.
Qiu Ze knew he couldn’t just wait for fate to unfold. He decided to go see Lin Xiao and face this impending separation head-on. On a rainy afternoon, Qiu Ze drove to her studio, knowing that today would be their last meeting, and that he might never see her again.
The door to the studio was still open, and Lin Xiao was sitting by the window, staring out at the rain. Raindrops left small traces on the glass, and her figure appeared especially solitary in the misty rain.
Qiu Ze gently pushed the door open and entered her world. Lin Xiao didn’t turn around but kept her posture unchanged. He stood beside her, softly asking, “You’re leaving?”
Lin Xiao finally turned, her eyes showing a trace of exhaustion. “Yes, I leave tomorrow. I need a new environment to reassess myself.”
Qiu Ze’s heart sank. After a brief silence, he asked softly, “And what about us? Are you really going to leave like this?”
Lin Xiao didn’t answer immediately. She just stared at him, as if weighing the emotions hidden in his words. Then, she said:“I’m not saying I don’t want to see you, but I’m not sure if our relationship can withstand this test. You know, my past is not something that can be easily touched, and you... I…”
Qiu Ze understood her concerns. He also understood that his anxiety and insecurity had left a significant shadow in her heart. He walked up to her, his eyes determined. “I know you’re scared, but I want to tell you, I’m not afraid. I’m not afraid to face your past, I’m not afraid to face all your insecurities. I just hope you can give us a chance to face the future together.”
Lin Xiao gently closed her eyes, as if contemplating Qiu Ze’s words. Her face appeared soft in the rain, but her eyes remained cold, as if hiding untold pain.
“Are you sure?” she asked softly, her voice tinged with vulnerability. “Can you endure all the pain and insecurity I bring? I’m not that perfect woman, and you might never fully understand me.”
Qiu Ze reached out and gently lifted her chin, his gaze sincere and unwavering. “I don’t need you to be perfect. I just need you to be your true self. No matter what you are, I’m willing to walk with you. You’re not alone anymore; we can face everything together.”
A flicker of doubt crossed Lin Xiao’s eyes, but she quickly regained her composure. “I don’t want to trap you. Our worlds are too different. I don’t want you to get lost because of me.”
Qiu Ze took a deep breath, recalling the painful memories of the past. He understood Lin Xiao’s fear; he knew she didn’t want to suffer again. But he knew that this time, he wouldn’t let go easily.
“My world was never perfect,” Qiu Ze whispered. “I’ve faced failures and countless obstacles, but I still keep moving forward. Being with you, I’m not afraid of difficulties, and I’m not afraid of getting lost. I just fear missing you, missing the possibility between us.”
The sound of rain grew louder, and the view outside the window became increasingly blurry. But in the midst of this mist, Qiu Ze’s gaze was exceptionally clear. He knew that he couldn’t decide Lin Xiao’s choice, but he could choose to courageously pursue their future, no matter how difficult it might be.
The corner of Lin Xiao’s eyes became moist. She looked at Qiu Ze, as if seeing the determination and warmth in his eyes. She lowered her head and softly said, “You’re right. Maybe I’ve hesitated too much. Maybe I should give myself a chance, give you a chance.”
This sentence felt like the first light of dawn, illuminating all of Qiu Ze’s doubts and worries. He reached out and held her hand, the warm touch closing the distance between them.
“No matter what decision you make, I will support you,” Qiu Ze said, his eyes filled with determination. “Wherever you go, I will be behind you, walking with you.”
Lin Xiao looked at him, her lips curving up slightly as if revealing a long-lost smile. “Thank you, Qiu Ze.” She said softly, her eyes finally showing a hint of long-missed tenderness.
That night, in the storm, two hearts finally found their support in each other.
