The Voice of the Moon

1981 Words
The night felt different. Elara noticed it the moment she stepped outside. It wasn’t the cold—though the air had a sharper edge than usual, brushing against her skin like a warning. It wasn’t the silence either, though the forest had gone unnaturally still, as if every creature within it had retreated into hiding. It was something deeper. Something she couldn’t explain. The moon hung high above the trees, full and luminous, casting silver light across the pack grounds. Normally, it would have felt comforting. Familiar. Tonight, it felt like it was watching her. Waiting. Elara wrapped her arms around herself, though she wasn’t cold. Not really. The warmth inside her was still there. Steady. Constant. But it had changed. It no longer felt wild or unstable. It felt… aware. Like it was waiting for something. Or someone. Her breath slowed as she stepped further into the clearing. She hadn’t meant to come out here. Not consciously. But something had pulled her. Guided her steps without her realizing it. The same way the bond pulled at her when Kael was near. Except this— this was different. Softer. Older. More powerful. Elara stopped in the center of the clearing. The moonlight spilled over her, bathing her in silver. And the moment it did— the warmth inside her surged. Not violently. Not uncontrollably. But fully. Completely. Like something had finally aligned. Her breath caught. Her fingers curled slightly at her sides as energy rippled through her veins—not painful, not overwhelming, but undeniable. “What…” she whispered, her voice barely audible in the stillness. The air shifted. A soft wind moved through the clearing, stirring the leaves in a slow, deliberate motion. The trees creaked faintly. And then— the world went quiet. Not silent. But muted. Like everything else had been pushed to the background. Elara’s heart began to race. Because she felt it. That presence again. Stronger this time. Closer. Watching. “…You came.” The voice wasn’t loud. It didn’t echo. It didn’t come from any direction. It was simply… there. Inside her mind. Clear. Ancient. Powerful. Elara froze. Her breath stopped completely. “…Who’s there?” she whispered. The warmth inside her flared softly. Not in fear. In recognition. “…You already know.” Elara’s heart pounded harder. Because she did. Or at least— a part of her did. A part she hadn’t been listening to. “…The Moon Goddess,” she breathed. The moment the words left her lips— the energy around her shifted. The light grew brighter. The air warmer. The presence stronger. “…At last.” Elara’s knees nearly gave out. Not from force. But from the weight of it. The realization. This wasn’t imagination. This wasn’t her losing control. This was real. “Why… me?” she asked, her voice trembling. “I’m nothing. I’m just—” “…You are not nothing.” The words cut through her instantly. Firm. Unyielding. And filled with something she had never felt directed at her before. Certainty. “…You were never meant to be what they made you.” Elara’s chest tightened. Her throat burned. “Then what am I?” she asked, the question breaking out of her before she could stop it. The clearing seemed to hold its breath. The moonlight intensified. The warmth inside her rose— not violently. But fully. Like something awakening. “…You are mine.” Elara’s breath caught sharply. “…Chosen.” The word echoed through her. “…Blessed.” Her heart pounded harder. “…And you will rise.” The power inside her surged. Not outward. Not destructive. But inward. Filling every part of her. Strengthening. Changing. “Rise into what?” she asked, her voice barely steady. The answer came slowly. Deliberately. “…What you were always meant to be.” The world shifted. For a moment— Elara saw something else. Not the clearing. Not the forest. But something older. A vision. Faint. But powerful. A throne of silver. Wolves bowing. Power that stretched beyond a single pack— beyond territory. Beyond control. Elara gasped. The vision snapped away. She stumbled slightly, catching herself before she fell. Her breathing was uneven now. Her heart racing. “I don’t understand,” she said. “…You will.” The voice softened slightly. Not weaker. But more distant. “…But not alone.” Elara frowned slightly. “What does that mean?” There was a pause. Then— “…The one who rejected you… will stand beside you.” Her breath caught. Kael. Of course. The bond pulsed faintly at the thought of him. “…If he survives what is coming.” Elara’s eyes widened. “What do you mean—” But the presence was already fading. The warmth dimming. The connection slipping away. “…You are not the only one who has awakened.” The final words echoed faintly. “…And not all blessings are kind.” Then— silence. The clearing returned. The night sounds crept back in. The wind moved again. But Elara stood frozen. Because everything had changed. Not just for her. But for all of them. Elsewhere… Kael felt it the moment it happened. The bond. It surged violently, stronger than anything before. Not chaotic. Not unstable. But powerful. Focused. Awake. His head snapped up. His wolf growled low. “Elara…” Something had changed. And this time— it wasn’t just her. It was the world around them. Kael didn’t hesitate. The moment the surge hit him, he was already moving. The bond snapped tight in his chest—stronger than before, clearer, sharper. It wasn’t chaotic this time. It wasn’t erratic. It was… aligned. That alone was enough to set every instinct on edge. Because nothing about this situation had been controlled before. Nothing about her had been controlled. Until now. Kael moved through the pack grounds with long, deliberate strides, his senses fully sharpened. The night air cut against his skin, but he barely felt it. All his focus was locked on the bond. On the direction it pulled him. Toward the clearing. Toward her. His wolf stirred beneath the surface, restless, alert. Something’s changed. Kael didn’t respond. Because he already knew. He could feel it. Not just through the bond—but in the air itself. The forest was quieter. Too quiet. Like it was holding its breath. Watching. Waiting. Kael slowed as he reached the edge of the clearing. And then— he stopped. Because he saw her. Elara stood in the center of the clearing, bathed in moonlight. But it wasn’t just the light that made him pause. It was her. Something about her had changed. Not physically. Not in a way anyone else might immediately notice. But to him— it was undeniable. Her presence was different. Stronger. Steadier. As if whatever had been unstable inside her had finally… settled. His eyes narrowed slightly. “…Elara.” Her head lifted at the sound of his voice. Slowly. Deliberately. And when their eyes met— the bond surged. Not violently. Not painfully. But powerfully. Like something had clicked into place. Kael inhaled sharply. Because for the first time— it didn’t feel like resistance. It felt like connection. Elara didn’t look away. She didn’t lower her gaze. Didn’t shrink. And that alone told him everything he needed to know. “You felt it,” she said quietly. It wasn’t a question. Kael stepped forward. Slow. Measured. “What happened?” Elara hesitated. Just for a moment. And in that moment, Kael saw something he hadn’t expected. Not fear. Not confusion. But… weight. Like she was carrying something too large for her to fully understand. “…She spoke to me,” Elara said. Kael stilled. His expression didn’t change immediately. But something in his eyes did. Sharp. Alert. “Who?” Elara held his gaze. “…The Moon Goddess.” Silence followed. Not disbelief. Not mockery. But something far more dangerous. Consideration. Kael studied her carefully. Watching. Measuring. Looking for any sign that she was mistaken. Or lying. But there was none. Only certainty. “…Tell me everything,” he said. So she did. She told him about the voice. About the presence. About the words. Chosen. Blessed. Meant to rise. And when she finished— the silence that followed was heavier than anything before. Kael didn’t speak right away. Because if what she was saying was true— then this wasn’t just about uncontrolled power anymore. This was something else entirely. Something… bigger. “…A Blessed Luna,” he said finally. The words felt strange even as he said them. Ancient. Almost forgotten. Elara frowned slightly. “You know what that means?” Kael’s jaw tightened. “…Not exactly.” But he knew enough. Enough to understand that this wasn’t normal. That this wasn’t something the pack could ignore. And definitely not something they would accept easily. “She said something else,” Elara added quietly. Kael’s gaze returned to her. “What?” Elara hesitated. “…That I’m not the only one who has awakened.” That— that changed everything. Kael’s expression darkened instantly. “Explain.” “She said not all blessings are kind,” Elara continued. “That something else is coming.” The forest seemed to grow colder around them. Kael’s instincts flared sharply. Threat. Danger. Not immediate— but approaching. “Then we don’t have time,” he said. Elara blinked. “Time for what?” Kael stepped closer. The bond tightened again—but this time, it didn’t overwhelm her. It steadied her. “To wait for you to lose control again,” he said. Her chest tightened slightly. But she didn’t look away. Didn’t retreat. “Then what do we do?” Kael held her gaze. And for the first time— there was no hesitation in his answer. “We train.” The word settled between them. Heavy. Inevitable. Elara’s pulse quickened. “You think I can control this?” Kael didn’t look away. “I know you have to.” Because if she didn’t— whatever was coming… would destroy them all. At the Edge of the Clearing… They weren’t alone. Two figures stood hidden among the trees. Watching. Listening. One shifted slightly, his expression tense. “…Did you hear that?” The other nodded slowly. “Every word.” Their gazes remained fixed on the clearing. On Elara. “…She’s not just dangerous,” the first one said. “No,” the second replied quietly. “…She’s something else entirely.” A pause. Then— “…We need to tell Mara.” And just like that— the balance of the pack began to shift. Back in the Clearing Elara didn’t know she was being watched. Didn’t know that the moment she had just lived— would change everything. She only knew one thing. The fear that had once controlled her… was beginning to fade. And in its place— something stronger was rising. Not confidence. Not yet. But something close. Something steady. Something… inevitable. She looked at Kael. Really looked at him. And for the first time— she didn’t feel smaller. She didn’t feel beneath him. The bond between them didn’t feel like something she had to endure. It felt like something she could stand within. “Okay,” she said. Kael’s brow lifted slightly. “Okay?” Elara nodded. Her voice steadier than it had ever been. “Train me.” The words were simple. But the meaning behind them— was not. Kael held her gaze for a long moment. Measuring. Considering. And then— he nodded. Once. “Tomorrow.” The word carried weight. Finality. Because tomorrow— everything would begin to change. Not just for her. But for the entire pack. And neither of them knew— just how far those changes would go.
