CHAPTER 1
I believe in myself.
Katherine's POV
My name is Katherine Sunnak, and I have a beautiful 10-year-old daughter named Nikki. She is my princess, with green eyes and hair as golden as the sun, just like her father—though I hate to admit it, he can be quite the i***t. Nikki is my world and my motivation. If anything were to happen to her, the person responsible would have no idea of the torment that would await them. Nikki is a happy and very intelligent girl, though sometimes I wonder if she's a bit too mature for her age. She often prefers to watch us work all day rather than play with her friends at school, but that's just how she is.
But let's set that aside for now. My story begins 10 years ago, when I was barely 17 and before my precious Nikki was born.
My life was never as perfect as it seemed, even though I grew up in a well-off family. My father, a major shareholder in the Warren family's billion-dollar construction company, was a man of ambition, status, and great power. But despite all the privilege that came with it, I knew there was a price to pay. On the surface, everything appeared perfect in our personal lives as well. However, my father never showed any affection toward my mother in front of me. As a child, I didn't fully understand what was wrong, but deep down, I sensed that their relationship was far from normal. It wasn't until later that I realized their marriage had been arranged by their parents.
Then, one day, my mother fell ill and passed away. That's when my personal hell truly began.
A few days after my mother's passing, my father returned with an elegant, younger woman by his side and a girl who was two years older than me. It was then that I discovered the truth: the girl was my half-sister. As you might expect, my father had a lover, and from that relationship, they had a daughter—Diana.
The first few months were tolerable, I suppose, but as time went on, their true personalities began to emerge. Both mother and daughter were ambitious, with an insatiable obsession for fashion. My foolish father was all too eager to indulge their every whim. As for me, they did everything they could to keep me out of sight. According to my stepmother, I was "abnormal" simply because I was curious, eager to learn more, and passionate about reading. Even my teachers suggested that I should be placed in a more advanced class, but to my stepmother, this was a humiliation. The thought of her beloved daughter being in the same classroom as her stepdaughter was unacceptable. So, what did they do? Well, take a guess.
They sent me to Mexico to live as a maid, to learn humility and, according to them, to "know my place." But they had no idea the favor they were doing me. In Mexico, I met Benjamin, my soulmate and the son of the man entrusted with my care. Both men were kind-hearted and recognized that my intelligence was anything but ordinary. Yes, I am the odd one out in the Sunnak family, and I am immensely proud of it. With the help of Benjamin's father, I managed to create a construction company at a young age. Everything was going well, and I was on the brink of turning 18, but then everything changed. An employee of my parents arrived from New York to bring me back.
What happened next? Well, a lot of things. I was humiliated and ridiculed, but the worst part was when I began to trust someone from that damned aristocratic class I despise so much, only to have my heart broken. The only good thing that came out of that world was my little Nikki.
"Miss Katherine, your plane is ready."
That was the call to my new reality. Today, at 28 years old, I returned to New York as a different woman—stronger, determined, and ready to show them exactly what I'm made of. This time, no one will hurt me.
"Mommy, take care of yourself."
"My little light, don’t worry. Mom will be back soon. In the meantime, listen to Uncle Benjamin and Aunt Maria. And remember, no mischief that’ll drive them crazy, okay?"
“No, Mommy, I’ll be a good girl. Don’t take too long, so you can see me win the ballet competition.”
Sometimes, I think this girl is even smarter than she lets on. She definitely got her intelligence from us—one of the few good things she inherited from her father, along with her features. My little one, all I want is for her to have everything she needs. But her sharp mind worries me at times. Once, she even managed to get into my company’s security system. She told me it was easy, and the manager claimed he accidentally left the password within her reach, so I chalked it up to coincidence. Still, I can’t help but wonder. Poor thing—sometimes I think she really does need a father, despite the brave little smile she always gives me. Maybe, after I settle things with that i***t of a father she has, I’ll consider it.
I say goodbye to everyone and leave Mexico, but it’s only for a few days. Once I get the divorce I’ve been yearning for—the contract’s time limit finally expired—I’ll be free. Free from the Warrens, free to be the independent and powerful woman I’ve always wanted to be.
Mauro Warren's POV
Today was supposed to be one of the most pivotal days for my family's company. We were on the verge of closing a million-dollar contract, but someone dared to jeopardize it. The culprit was none other than the owner of a rival company that had recently made waves in the construction industry, stealing away many of our key clients. Rumor had it that this person was expected to make an appearance at the party organized by the mayor of New York.
"Are you sure Mirko is coming?"
"Mauro has confirmed his attendance, but their identity remains a mystery. We don't even know if Mirko is a man or a woman—the person who’s been keeping you up at night."
"Nobody keeps me up at night—except for a woman who disappeared 10 years ago without a trace. Find out who this person is. I’ll do my own digging too."
"But Mauro, we’ve been investigating this for a long time, and we haven’t found anything. It’s as if no one knows who Mirko is. They only said a representative would likely show up today, so don’t expect to meet the owner."
"Whatever the case, making contact with the representative or the vice president is still a significant step. This is a very important party, and Mirko must attend."
Something told me the owner of Lunnar Corporation would show up at this event. I just needed to be patient and wait for him to arrive. After all, the party was filled with the city’s elite—the mayor, politicians, and wealthy individuals, all eager to spend large sums on their whims.
"Wow! What beauty we have here today."
I heard one of the businessmen exclaim, and immediately, I turned to see where his gaze—and the gazes of many others—was directed.
Indeed, the mayor was the first to approach her, greeting her warmly. She was undeniably beautiful and striking, but there was something about her that made me feel as if I had seen her before.
"You were also captivated by that woman, huh Mauro? She’s quite pretty, isn’t she?"
"Forget about her, Mirko. There are many beautiful women here; she’s just one of them. Let’s stay focused on finding the owner of Lunnar Corporation. I’ve heard he’s a young man. Mirko? Hey, are you listening?"
But Mirko wasn’t listening. The woman was still drawing attention, and now she was approaching us with the mayor.
"Mauro is coming over. Do I look okay?" Mirko asked, adjusting his tie.
"Shut up, you look like Prince Charming," I replied, trying to focus on the task at hand.
"That's how I need to see myself—there’s a lot of competition here."
"i***t, she might be married."
"Impossible. If she were, her foolish husband wouldn’t let her come alone to a party like this, where hungry wolves are eyeing her."
"You really sound pathetic, Mirko. You’d better keep quiet or you’ll make a fool of yourself in front of her."
As soon as we made contact, I felt a strange sense of familiarity with her face. Yes, I had seen her before. She looked very similar to someone I knew, but there was a noticeable difference. I couldn't quite place it.
"Mr. Warren, may I introduce you to Miss..."
"Katy?" I interrupted the mayor before he could finish. Mirko’s jaw dropped, and the smile on his face vanished. He knew who Katy was—or rather, Katherine.
"K-Katy?!" he whispered in disbelief.
"Wow, do you know each other?" the mayor asked, clearly puzzled.
She looked at me with surprise, her beauty even more pronounced now. The years had certainly been kind to her.
"No, I don’t know him. Perhaps you’re confusing me with someone else, sir. I’m sorry, but I’m not the person you think I am."
So now, after she vanished without a trace ten years ago, leaving no sign of her presence, and despite my efforts to find her across the US—under every rock—I was faced with this excuse. How dare she? I’m not some plaything she can dismiss at her convenience. I’ll show her that I’m not someone she can evade so easily. She owes me respect, and I won’t let her slip away again. Not this time. If she wants to see how ruthless and cruel I can be, she’ll find out soon enough, Katherine Sunnak.
