I watched Kendria disappear into the darkness and felt my heart break into a million pieces. I knew it was too good to be true. I finally found my mate, my beautiful, headstrong, perfect mate, and we couldn't be together. I ached to follow her, but I knew there was no point. She was hell bent on leading her pack in the mountains. I couldn't abandon my duties to Harvest Moon, nor did I want to. We both had people that relied on us.
Someone opened the door behind me and I swiped the backs of my hands across my eyes, trying to erase the evidence of my crying. "Hey, man," Mason said, coming up next to me by the porch rail. I had briefly linked with him before the banquet about finding my mate but we hadn't had a chance to talk until now.
"Hey," I said glumly, staring off into space.
