CHAPTER ONE -THE QUEEN HAS ARRIVED
The world knew many monsters.
Werewolves.
Witches.
Demons.
But there was one name that made even monsters lower their voices.
Black Rose.
For centuries, the Black Rose Clan had existed beyond the reach of humans, governments, hunters, and rival supernatural kingdoms.
They lived in darkness.
They ruled in silence.
And they never forgave betrayal.
At the center of their empire stood a black castle surrounded by thousands of crimson roses.
Tonight, every rose had been covered in frost.
Not because winter had arrived.
Because their queen had returned.
A convoy of black cars moved through the enormous iron gates.
The guards immediately bowed.
The first car stopped.
Silence fell across the courtyard.
The rear door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Isabella Vane.
Twenty-three years old.
Long black hair.
Cold eyes.
A black dress that moved with the wind.
No crown.
No jewelry announcing her status.
She didn't need either.
Everyone already knew who she was.
The Queen of Black Rose.
Isabella looked toward the castle.
She had been gone for six months.
Six months spent hunting the people responsible for betraying her family.
Six months without sending a single message.
And now she was home.
A young vampire hurried toward her.
"Your Majesty."
Isabella stopped.
"Speak."
The vampire swallowed.
"Your council is waiting."
"Let them wait."
"They've been waiting for three hours."
"Then they've learned patience."
She continued walking.
The young vampire hurried after her.
"There's something else."
Isabella stopped again.
"What?"
"Your uncle has requested a private meeting."
Her expression didn't change.
"My uncle requested?"
"Yes."
"Tell him no."
"He said it's urgent."
Isabella looked at him.
Everything about her was calm.
That was what frightened people most.
She never needed to raise her voice.
"Tell him," she said softly, "that if it were truly urgent, he would have come to me."
The vampire bowed.
"Yes, Your Majesty."
Isabella walked away.
Behind her, the guards exchanged nervous glances.
One whispered,
"She hasn't changed."
The other shook his head.
"No."
He looked toward the castle.
"She's worse."
***
The throne room was enormous.
Black marble.
Silver pillars.
Hundreds of candles.
And at the far end stood the throne of the Black Rose Queen.
Isabella entered.
Every member of the council rose.
Some bowed.
Some looked uncomfortable.
One didn't bow at all.
Lord Victor Vane.
Her uncle.
The oldest surviving member of the Vane bloodline.
He stood beside the throne with his hands behind his back.
"Isabella."
She walked past him.
"Victor."
"You ignored my request."
"Yes."
"I requested a private conversation."
"And I declined."
His jaw tightened.
"You've been gone for six months."
"I was busy."
"Your absence weakened the clan."
Isabella finally turned toward him.
"My absence revealed who was loyal."
Nobody spoke.
Victor's eyes narrowed.
"You think everyone here betrayed you?"
"No."
Isabella smiled faintly.
"Only the ones who look nervous."
Several council members immediately looked away.
Victor noticed.
"So this is what you've become?"
Isabella approached the throne.
"What have I become?"
"A tyrant."
A few vampires gasped.
Isabella simply looked at him.
Then she sat.
The entire room seemed to shrink around her.
"A tyrant?" she repeated.
Victor nodded.
"You rule through fear."
Isabella leaned back.
"Fear is honest."
"Fear doesn't create loyalty."
"No."
Her eyes moved across the council.
"But it makes betrayal expensive."
Silence.
Victor stepped closer.
"You cannot continue ruling like this."
Isabella smiled.
"I can."
She crossed one leg over the other.
"And I will."
Victor's expression darkened.
"You are still young."
"I know."
"You haven't earned the right to sit there."
Isabella looked at the throne beneath her.
Then back at him.
"My father left it to me."
"Your father made mistakes."
"My father is dead."
The room went silent.
Isabella's voice became colder.
"So unless you're planning to resurrect him, I suggest you stop discussing his decisions."
Victor stared at her.
Then he smiled.
It wasn't a friendly smile.
"Perhaps you're not as clever as everyone believes."
Isabella's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Perhaps."
Victor turned toward the council.
"Then perhaps you should hear what happened while you were away."
He snapped his fingers.
A guard entered carrying a black box.
He placed it on the floor.
Isabella looked at it.
"What is that?"
Victor opened the lid.
Inside was a single black rose.
Its petals were covered in strange silver markings.
Isabella's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But everyone noticed.
"Where did you find it?"
"Outside the northern border."
"When?"
"Last night."
Isabella stood.
The room became completely silent.
She approached the box.
She didn't touch the rose.
"Who left it?"
"We don't know."
"Who was guarding the border?"
Victor hesitated.
"Four guards."
"And?"
"They're missing."
Isabella looked up.
"Missing?"
"All four."
Her eyes returned to the rose.
The silver markings were familiar.
Very familiar.
A symbol from a vampire clan that had supposedly disappeared more than a hundred years ago.
The Crimson Court.
A clan that had once tried to destroy Black Rose.
Isabella's voice dropped.
"Who else knows about this?"
"Only the council."
"Good."
Victor frowned.
"Why?"
"Because if this information reaches the other clans, they'll panic."
"And if they panic?"
Isabella looked toward the enormous windows.
"They'll start choosing sides."
A council member spoke nervously.
"Against whom?"
Isabella's eyes hardened.
"That's what we're going to find out."
Suddenly—
BOOM.
The castle shook.
Every candle went out.
The vampires immediately turned toward the doors.
A guard rushed inside.
"Your Majesty!"
Isabella remained perfectly still.
"What?"
"The western wall."
"What happened?"
The guard's breathing was uneven.
"There are bodies outside."
The room fell silent.
Victor looked at Isabella.
"Whose?"
The guard swallowed.
"Our enemies."
Isabella's eyes narrowed.
"How many?"
"Thirty-seven."
"And who killed them?"
The guard hesitated.
"We don't know."
Isabella walked toward the doors.
"Show me."
Victor followed.
"So much for your peaceful return."
Isabella glanced at him.
"I never promised peace."
Outside, the courtyard was strangely quiet.
The vampires gathered around the western wall.
Isabella walked through them.
Nobody dared stop her.
At the edge of the forest stood a single figure.
A man.
Tall.
Dressed entirely in black.
He stood several yards beyond the castle gates.
Nobody had seen him arrive.
Isabella stared at him.
The man stared back.
Even from that distance, she could feel the confidence surrounding him.
He wasn't afraid.
That alone made him interesting.
Victor whispered,
"Who is that?"
Isabella didn't answer.
The stranger slowly raised one hand.
He held a black envelope.
Then he placed it on the ground.
And walked away.
Isabella's guards immediately moved forward.
"Stay."
Her voice stopped them.
She walked to the envelope herself.
Victor frowned.
"Isabella, don't."
She ignored him.
She picked it up.
There was no name.
No seal.
Only five words written across the front.
THE KING HAS COME FOR YOU.
Isabella read it twice.
Then she smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
The smile of someone who had just been handed a challenge.
Victor watched her carefully.
"What does it say?"
Isabella folded the letter.
"Nothing important."
Then she looked toward the forest.
The stranger was gone.
But somewhere beyond the trees, a man watched the castle from the darkness.
Adrian Blackwood.
Twenty-six.
Mafia king.
The most dangerous human ruler alive.
And he had just crossed into vampire territory.
Not to negotiate.
Not to surrender.
But to deliver a message.
The game had begun.
And neither the Queen of Black Rose nor the King of the Underworld understood yet that their first meeting would change both their empires forever.
