T WAS NICE, WEB DECIDED, sitting at the table in the kitchen, illuminated by the warm bronze glow of the Tilley lamp and watching Kevin and Grackle argue about teaspoons. Apparently because they were shiny, they belonged to the crow, who kept trying to get the cutlery drawer open with beak and claw, like a corvid contestant of The Adventure Game. Kevin disagreed quite strongly with him about it... “Grackle, we’ve talked about this. You’re only going to throw everything out of the drawer and onto the floor, leave it alone...” and Web couldn’t help laughing at them. He felt like he hadn’t laughed for a very long time. As the evening went on, that sense of familiarity and belonging grew. Kevin found a bottle of wine at the back of one of his cupboards and they shared it over the casserole
