Chapter 1
I was the first female Alpha the wolf clan had seen in a millennium.
At my succession ceremony beneath the full moon, Blake presented me with a seal he had carved by hand.
My name was engraved on it: Serena Langford.
"Alpha, this is my gift to celebrate your ascension."
Laughter rippled through the hall.
"An omega of such low status thinks he has the right to give the Alpha a gift?"
Damon Whitlock, the lord of the neighboring territory, leaned against a pillar with a scornful smile.
"Blake, where did you pick up that seal? The carving is so crude, and you still dared to present it at the ceremony."
Blake's shoulders trembled slightly, but he remained on his knees, holding out the gift.
"I... carved it myself," he said softly.
"It took me three months."
The hall fell silent for a moment, only for mocking laughter to erupt again.
"Who taught him that? Does he even know what a seal means?"
"Only an Alpha's mate is allowed to carve their personal seal!"
"A mere omega thinks he is worthy of carving a seal for the Alpha?"
Blake lowered his head in humiliation, though his back remained straight.
"Enough. He is my lieutenant."
Anyone who wanted to target him would have to consider my position first.
My voice was quiet, but the pressure from it silenced the hall.
"Look up," I said.
He raised his face, trembling.
Moonlight streamed down from the ceiling, illuminating the desperate, humble hope in his eyes.
I reached out and took the seal. My fingertips accidentally brushed against his palm.
Blake shuddered, and the tips of his ears quickly turned red.
"Lieutenant Wainscott," I said, lifting his chin and leaning close to his ear.
"I love this gift. From now on, I'll use it every day."
