Chapter One
The bar was a middle-class kind of place. A relaxed atmosphere paired with classical music. It could hold up to 150 people in the main room for any event. The lighting was black chandeliers hanging around the open space. Private rooms lined the back wall, just past the kitchen entrance. A dark cherry red painted the walls, contrasting with the black-tiled floor. This way matches its brothers' and sisters' atmospheric aesthetic. Relaxed and welcoming for the day drinkers. The owner has about ten different daytimer bars and another ten for the nightlife. Those have a completely different aesthetic altogether. I frequent this bar a few times a week. Normally, I'm in a private room for space to spread out paperwork and photos of people. But my current case is not going well, so I do not have the mental capacity for any meetings today. Sipping my drink, lost in thought, I hadn't realized someone had approached me. A hand had reached up, grabbing my hair, forcing me to pay attention to who was trying to speak to me. Not in a pleasant tone either. "Look here, boys, someone thinks they're better than us and is ignoring us. How can someone be that rude, huh?”” The one 'gentleman' yanked my hair, pulled my head back, trying to get me to look into his almond eyes. I met his eyes, however, just not how he wanted. Standing up, I whirled around, freeing my hair from his hold. The hair covering my right eye moved just right, revealing the massive scar stretching down to my neck. He was the only one to see that and backed off immediately. So I patiently asked them, "Please go away." One of his buddies goes, "Oh, come on, baby. All we want is to have some fun." He then repeated what the first one did and grabbed some of my long black hair, and I stiffened when he leaned in to nip at my neck. Too bad, though, they wanted to treat me like a w***e. The bartender turned around to give me another drink and saw the look on my face. He stiffened too, then ‌backed away to go call 9-1-1 for the guys. They just had to ruin my drinking and drowning thoughts today. Raising my left hand, I wrapped it around his neck, tightening my grip slowly. He could see everything going out of control, and he whimpered pathetically, which made me laugh. Turning toward the front of the bar near the big square windows, I dragged the ‘gentleman’ by his neck; I threw him through one window into the street. Turning my head toward the shocked guys before speaking, "Get out now, or I'm going to have to mess up those pretty faces of yours. Got it? If I see or even hear you hurt or talk to another woman again. You're going to end up dead." I turned fully to look at them. "And now you can either walk away or stay and end up like him out there. He made the mistake of not listening to my wish of being left alone. Now. Get. Out." To my joy, they paid for my drink and said they would pay for the replacement window, then left. I laughed when the guy tried to get up and followed his friends, but he was still dizzy and ran into a steel light pole. I sat back down on my chair and asked for another drink in a cold, tired tone, but as nicely as possible, he gave me a knowing look. Which annoyed me even more, he is my older brother. He reached under the bar to give me a brush with a ponytail holder so I could put my hair up. Back home, my big brother's name is Killer Wolf or that’s what he preferably goes by. His real name is Leon, here in this realm. He raised me when our parents passed away, trying to protect us when I was about ten and Killer Wolf was sixteen. Leon told me everything that happened and since then he has been raising me into adulthood. He still has to make sure I stay out of trouble, but with my jobs it's almost impossible. I figured out how to help out with paying the bills, but I'm not sure my brother knew how I was doing it. I, at least, waited until I was fifteen to start regular work. I do know that he, however, did appreciate my help over the years. Back to the here, and now, I was putting my hair up into a ponytail when another fight broke out and this time I definitely wasn’t involved. However, I could tell they were not drunk. I walked over to them and pulled them both apart. Both had wide wild eyes and fake angry emotions in them. They were looking at me like I was the devil or something, which is accurate, considering my bad mood. I took them to the back room so I could talk to them and get the story, but before I could get the door closed, they started talking at once. One said "We were told to find and give this to you. Sorry, but we must go now." They handed me a letter with mine and Leon's name on it.
