Ten years ago, someone destroyed Mia Calloway’s life and walked away clean. Now her estranged sister is getting married — and Mia has just found the guest list. Chapter One: The Guest List
Mia Calloway hadn't set foot in Ashcombe Hall in ten years, and standing at the bottom of the gravel drive, she understood why. The house looked exactly the same — pale stone, ivy creeping up one wing, the kind of quiet grandeur that made people lower their voices without knowing why. It was the kind of place that kept secrets well. She almost turned around twice on the drive up. Almost. But Claire was getting married in two days, and even after everything, Mia hadn't been able to say no. "You came," her mother said, appearing on the front steps like she'd been watching the road. She looked older, thinner, her smile the same careful, hopeful thing it had always been when it came to her daughters being in the same room. "I said I would." "You said a lot of things, once." Mia let that pass. She wasn't here to relitigate the last decade in the driveway. Inside, the house buzzed with wedding preparation — florists arguing over centerpieces, a caterer's assistant carrying trays of glassware, someone's aunt already three glasses of prosecco deep at eleven in the morning. Mia found her way to the study, the one room in the house that had always felt like hers, and that was where she found it: a leather folder, embossed *Guest List — Ashcombe Wedding*, sitting open on the desk. She wasn't trying to snoop. She told herself that later, when it mattered. She scanned the names out of habit more than curiosity — old family friends, Claire's fiancé's relatives, people from town she half-remembered. And then she stopped. One name. Halfway down the second page, typed in the same clean font as all the others, as if it belonged there. As if a decade hadn't passed. As if nothing had happened at all. Her hands went cold before her mind caught up. She read it again, certain she'd imagined it, certain her memory was playing some cruel trick brought on by nostalgia and nerves. But it was still there. Still real. A name she hadn't let herself say out loud in ten years, sitting on a wedding guest list like it was nothing. Like they hadn't ruined her life and simply walked away from it. Mia closed the folder slowly, her pulse loud in her own ears. Forty-eight hours. That was what she had before the ceremony, before this person — whoever they were now, whatever mask they were wearing — stood in the same room as her family and smiled like they belonged there. She needed to know why they were on this list. Who had invited them. Whether anyone else knew what she knew. And she needed to do it without her sister finding out that the sister she barely spoke to anymore was about to blow up her wedding week hunting a ghost. Mia slipped the folder into her bag, checked that no one had seen her, and stepped back out into the hallway with a smile fixed carefully in place. She had two days. She intended to use every hour of them.
