Chapter 13: Unexpected Alliance

371 Words
The morning sun streamed through the large windows, but the warmth outside could not reach Elara’s thoughts. A pile of documents sat before her, and a meeting with one of Nathaniel’s most important clients loomed in less than an hour. “Are you ready?” Nathaniel asked, entering the room. His voice was calm, but his eyes were sharp. Elara nodded, trying to hide her nervousness. “I… think so.” “You don’t have to think,” he said softly. “I’ll guide you. But you have to trust me.” The words made her pause. Trust him? She wasn’t sure she could, but the certainty in his eyes left little room for refusal. By the time they arrived at the client’s office, tension hung in the air. Cassia had tried to insinuate herself into the negotiations, but Nathaniel had made it clear: Elara was not to be undermined. As they went through the documents, Elara found herself surprisingly competent, her instincts sharp despite the pressure. Nathaniel noticed every step she took, every question she asked, and a faint nod of approval occasionally met her gaze. “You’re learning fast,” he said quietly when they stepped aside. “Better than I expected.” Elara felt a flutter in her chest she tried to ignore. “I… I just want to survive this,” she admitted. “Survival isn’t enough,” he said, voice low, almost intimate. “I want you to thrive. And you can—if you let me help.” The words lingered between them, unspoken promises hanging in the air. Elara’s heart beat faster, the invisible walls she had built around herself starting to crumble. After the meeting, Cassia tried one last subtle jab. “Not bad… for someone learning the ropes.” Nathaniel’s sharp glare silenced her immediately. “She’s more than capable. And she’s mine,” he said. Elara’s stomach twisted—mine?—but the warmth spreading through her chest was undeniable. As they returned to the house, silence settled between them. But this was not uncomfortable. It was filled with something unspoken, a mutual recognition: they had survived the storm together. And something stronger was growing. Something neither of them could ignore.
